  • acrylic on paper 22 x 40" For me, winter unfolds as a season of deep introspection and rejuvenation. It signifies a retreat, a gentle withdrawal into the cocoon of contemplation. It's a moment to hit the pause button, release a contemplative exhale, and immerse myself in a review of the past year. My surroundings undergo a magical transformation where the intricate lace of bare branches embellishes the muted backdrop. The air takes on a crisp quality, carrying a profound sense of clarity and calmness. In the snow-covered forest surrounding my home, a hushed and muffled symphony of nature emerges, creating a tranquil ambiance. Winter beckons me to embrace solitude, encouraging me to discover the beauty inherent in the stillness that blankets everything. Additional shipping/delivery charges will be handled between artist and buyer after the purchase.
  • acrylic on canvas board 20 x 16" Many times, I have visited Alaska and was enchanted and inspired by winter's beauty of nature showing off frozen dreams and abstract realities. Although that time of the year can certainly be harsh, it still offers the view of unique magnificence. It motivated me to paint Baby, It's Cold Outside. The cool shades of blue make underline the feeling of extreme cold. Additional shipping/delivery charges will be handled between artist and buyer after the purchase.
  • mixed media painting 30 x 40 x 2" The Sheep in Snow is a 30 x40” mixed media painting on Rives BFK paper. I adhered the original drawing onto a cradled wood panel. I then continued to paint into it and complete it with varnish. The gradual merging of the sheep and the snow in the background is reminiscent of many a snowstorm on the road to Syracuse where the snow clouded the vision ahead. Additional shipping/delivery charges will be handled between artist and buyer after the purchase.
  • photogravure etching 11 x 12" I am a visual artist working in the San Francisco Bay Area, and show my work locally and nationally. My artwork explores themes of nature in the form of animals, lands, skies and waters, always looking for the spirit within. It was Christmas Eve on the beach at Isle of Palms, SC, during the polar vortex, 19 degrees out. Everything was frozen, the sand and dunes, the water puddles, and even the wildlife. Nonetheless, we walked aside the surf, bundled in our puffy jackets and knit hats, scarves and gloves, and soaked in the ambiance, the salt water air, the sound of the waves, the hardness of the cold sand, observing the few birds that were flying around us or skittering on the beach. Upon encountering this very cold little crab, I felt so bad for it, and when I reached out to touch it, it moved. Ah, he is alive! I thought as I put him back into the waves, “there is hope”. This piece is a photogravure etching, the image made on photopolymer solar plates. It is fitting that both sun and water are involved in the process of making the plates, and contributed to the translation of the image. Additional shipping/delivery charges will be handled between artist and buyer after the purchase.
  • acrylic & colored pencil on wood 16 x 20 x 1.5" In my newest series, "Motion" I am exploring the concept of inertia and how that relates to ADHD. I’m sure most of you remember hearing the phrase “an object in motion stays in motion” from high school physics. I take it another step to say “a body in motion stays in motion. People with ADHD can have a difficult time transitioning between tasks. This can be mistaken for “laziness”. For example, if I’m sitting on the couch eating breakfast and know I have to get up to get ready to work, a lot of the time I just can’t. I know I need to, and I even WANT to get up. But my body remains seated. Or, I found in college that if I leaned on my forearms on my lofted bed, I’d get stuck doom-scrolling online for hours. Though my body may be still, my mind is still whirring. I have found that the only way to counteract this is to keep my body moving too—to move from task to task without physically pausing (unless I’m trying to take an intentional break). It’s a daily challenge that I’m sure a lot of people can relate to. My “Motion” series aims to reflect the duality of my mind moving while my body stays where it is and yearns to move forward. Additional shipping/delivery charges will be handled between artist and buyer after the purchase.
  • oil on panel 17 x 24 x .12" Dreaming Tree 2 - Ice is part of a series of works I have done over the past 4 years titled The Dreaming Tree series. It is both surreal and realistic. Additional shipping/delivery charges will be handled between artist and buyer after the purchase.
  • colored pencil on paper 34 x 23" New Beginnings is a portrait of my son using my own reference photographs, imagination and live luna moths that we raised and studied. The use of the luna moth and rosemary are to symbolize transformation, renewal, regeneration, faith, love, remembrance, and clarity after overcoming the trials and tribulations of the pandemic. My goal was to use a vibrant, saturated and painterly style to create a magical mood. Additional shipping/delivery charges will be handled between artist and buyer after the purchase.
  • oil on canvas 20 x 20 x 1" This painting is from a series of winter landscapes. The soft quiet beauty of the misty light in winter is the focus. Additional shipping/delivery charges will be handled between artist and buyer after the purchase.
  • oil on canvas 48 x 32 x 1.33" Tree of Life in Winter represents a dormant stage in the diagrammatic Tree of Life, depicting areas in Scripture called Sephirot. In the snow on the branches are etched very small letters indicting the 10 Sephirot starting with "Malkuth," the Kingdom.,through "Tipareth," Beauty, to "Binah," Understanding and "Chokmah," Wisdom all the way up to "Kether," the Crown; The Light shines through the branches lighting the way to the Spring thaw when the elements are again visibly activated and spiritual growth continues to enrich and balance life and the Universe. Additional shipping/delivery charges will be handled between artist and buyer after the purchase.
  • pastel on paper, mounted photograph 25 x 32" My assemblages: pastel on paper and mounted photographs, are created by layering juxtaposing elements: nature vs. glitter. The viewers are immersed into my glowing, dazzling world of color, light, dimension and beauty. The effects are invigorating and enlightening and allows the viewer to pause and restore. I create these stills by combining the elements: ie. photographs of the landscape in seasons and detailed photographs of glowing or glittering moments. The paralleling objects are added to accentuate these phenomena. These compelling compositions are the culmination of many carefully executed steps that define my unique creative process. My most memorable highlight was being reviewed by Sam Hunter, Art Critic and Historian of Modern and Contemporary Art who found my work “refreshingly unique”. This has been a common theme among many of her positive reviews. “Nancy offers a “different” approach and passion to drawing. She is consistent in her vision…one can always recognize her signature style no matter how much she has changed or grown.” Additional shipping/delivery charges will be handled between artist and buyer after the purchase.
  • acrylic on cradled paper 16 x 16 x 1.5" Bewitched is a state of mind, one where we question, wonder, and are captivated. Much like our journey through the winter months, the beauty of nature presents enchants and challenges as it casts a spell of wonderment. My interpretation of this fascinating occurrence is revealed like a morning blanket of the wintery mix with the impermanence we can't control. Additional shipping/delivery charges will be handled between artist and buyer after the purchase.
  • oil on canvas 11 x 14 x .5" Winter is one of my favorite times to paint. I love the quiet and cold--an utter slow-down to embrace the concept of stillness. These three paintings each depict the magic of that stillness--one, a frozen afternoon scene of the hunt, and two other two, dramatic glimpses of how the darkness illuminates the holiday lights like stars. Additional shipping/delivery charges will be handled between artist and buyer after the purchase.
  • digital archival photograph 8 x 9" I have spent much of my adult life photographing. I shoot anything that interests me, but over the years I have developed several specific portfolios that deal with my observations of city and country life: Street Seen, Rain, Graffiti, Torn Elegance and Reflections (puddles, buildings, ponds, stores) to name just a few. I have tried to teach myself to be a constant observer, searching always for new ways to interpret the customary. I see beauty in puddles, and have spent a lot of time gazing at, or photographing through wet surfaces. I ask the viewer join me and contemplate how things are magnificently transformed when one is looking “through” water-whether via puddle or pond reflections, or by simply gazing at a wet window during a rainstorm. Observed this way, all is transitory and ephemeral—perhaps a surreal, alternate reality, if you allow yourself to be drawn in by it. In my “Street Seen” series, I explore the lines and shapes that have been created over time, due to the effects of weather, traffic and corrosion. These crossing lines, or walkways that have eroded, are open to literal, figurative or conceptual interpretations. For me, they are found abstract compositions. I isolate small portions, hoping that to present these ubiquitous markings from another perspective. In short, I search for the aesthetic possibilities in mundane things that are often overlooked by people rushing by. I consider that which passers by have seen/not seen a million times. I hope to transcend the “ordinary” of the commonplace, and afford the willing viewer an opportunity to contemplate the world in a fresh way. Additional shipping/delivery charges will be handled between artist and buyer after the purchase.
  • oil on canvas 24 x 24 x 2" Through my painting I've become attentive to the splendid drama of my everyday world. The drama of an icy wonderland gives scale to the humble figures, in the mundane act of ice fishing as the ice spends them. Additional shipping/delivery charges will be handled between artist and buyer after the purchase.
  • monotype on paper (one of a kind) 28 x 24" My monotypes, like a freeze-frame, capture a moment in time. I have been making monotypes since 1979. My monotypes are essentially printed paintings, each one a one-of-a-kind piece. I use a very time-consuming method of working in layers on zinc plates with oil pastels, oil paints, lithographic crayons and hand-cut stencils, often using the ghost image left on a plate or a paint-laden stencil to launch a series. The painted plate is then heated and printed on Arches Cover or Rives BFK on an etching press. I have led numerous workshops and lectured at colleges and art centers on this remarkable medium. Additional shipping/delivery charges will be handled between artist and buyer after the purchase.
  • photo 14 x 11" My source of inspiration is nature and frozen objects come from natural surroundings. The frozen droplets on iced branches create something of beauty and surreal wonder of nature. They appear as jewels suspended from golden lines and the evening background illuminates them. Taking a moment to gaze at the photo is a healing experience and transcends you closer to the universal one. Additional shipping/delivery charges will be handled between artist and buyer after the purchase.
  • acrylic, iridescent silver, & silver leaf on cradled wood panel 12 x 12 x 1.5" The focus in my art is to create works that evoke light, depth, and energy using striking juxtapositions of color. I seek to achieve luminosity in my work, using the effects of color and contrast to create these illusions of light and buoyancy. This "months of the year" series explores the light and energy of winter, in a different way than my typically bright palettes do; the light on snow, the reflective surface glinting in the sun, the rich saturation of color within a white-washed landscape is a softer wave of energy. The blues of a winter scene are vivid and deep, and veer towards purples. The use of abstraction to create these pieces was an opportunity to visually imply the energy and feeling of frozen winter scenes with all of the sparkle and shimmer of sunlight or moonlight on a surface of snow. Winter carries the energy of wind, blowing swirls of snow or tossing lazy flakes in slow motion to the ground. There is depth and a three dimensional quality about snow and ice that is intriguing in its luminosity. There can also be a quiet stillness to a winter scene that makes time stand still. Additional shipping/delivery charges will be handled between artist and buyer after the purchase.
  • oil on linen 20 x 20" I have been painting winter landscapes for many years. Whether in a pastoral setting or in my own backyard, the quiet presence of a blanket of snow has always been serene and comforting. The three paintings I am presenting for “Frozen Dreams and Abstract Realities: Winter’s Dual Nature” represent work that I have painted again and again in varying ways; my backyard and the landscapes of the Finger Lakes in upstate New York. Both places are dear to me and are a never ending source of inspiration. Additional shipping/delivery charges will be handled between artist and buyer after the purchase.
  • mixed media 60 x 30 x 2" Imagine my surprise when I was shortlisted by the UN for the Art of Climate Change! I did not end with the final online publication, but it led me to the study of our earth and world with both beauty and concern. It is dimensional building of relief in my paintings, that maybe, just maybe, will bring the immediate concerns of present life to our touch. Additional shipping/delivery charges will be handled between artist and buyer after the purchase.
  • oil, acrylic, gold leaf marker, & ink on linen 30 x 24 x 1" Winter brings with it many emotions that make their way into my paintings in an abstract and organic way. The cool colors of the landscape give a hint of golden sunlight, we can feel warmth from the beauty that winter evokes. Additional shipping/delivery charges will be handled between artist and buyer after the purchase.
  • collage 6 x 8" The theme "Frozen Dreams and Abstract Realities: Winter’s Dual Nature" lends itself to a variety of interpretations in different media. My submission explores oil on paper, encaustic and collage to picture the changes in nature that winter brings when hiking in the mountains or walking along the seashore or just looking out of the window. From the slopes of the Jura in France to the shores of Montauk, Long Island, and the view from our window in Dorset, Vermont, snow is the constant winter companion. Additional shipping/delivery charges will be handled between artist and buyer after the purchase.
  • colored pencil 22 x 16" My artwork is a straightforward sharing of what I see in the world around me, whether it is my family and the traditions we share, or nature including rivers, lakes, rocks, and plants. Nature work is usually inspired by the lake area in northern Wisconsin where we have a family lake house, and by the gardens and trees of the Morton Arboretum in Lisle, Illinois, or by public gardens I visit on trips. I want the viewer to see the beauty of those places, to smell the scent of flowers and hear the rush of a river depicted in my work. Winter's End is inspired by a river near my lake house just as the long, cold, dark winter thaws into spring. Realism is the style that I have embraced for my work. Perhaps the truth is that it embraced me, flowing naturally from my hand. I have worked in oils, acrylics, and watercolors and occasionally still do, but colored pencil is the medium I have chosen for most of my work. What started as a lifestyle choice (pencils are clean and easily transportable from primary residence to lake house) became an artistic choice. I’m a control freak - free and loose is NOT my style - so colored pencils are the perfect medium for me. Their layering and blending capabilities, the transparency of some colors, and vibrant pigments help me convey the interplay of color and light in my subject matter. At times, I use colors that are more brilliant or saturated than what I see in nature, and this is the case with Winter's End. I want the viewer to feel the coming of spring even as the snow sparkles on the rocks. That color pleases me, and I hope it pleases the viewer. Additional shipping/delivery charges will be handled between artist and buyer after the purchase.
  • photograph 8 x 10" It is very exciting for snow to fall in the dry desert- so when it does I cannot resist taking photographs of the wonder of it all. This "happening" is so ephemeral that within a few hours it is all melted and gone. The light here is different than my home town in New Jersey. It has a different glow- very spiritual and other worldly especially the shot of the large tree. Additional shipping/delivery charges will be handled between artist and buyer after the purchase.
  • photography, digital 19 x 13" Ice and snow storms bring dramatic change to the landscape. It can be quite magical, and this is what I try to capture with my photographs. Additional shipping/delivery charges will be handled between artist and buyer after the purchase.
  • finger painted oil on canvas 24 x 30 x 1.78" My art explores the relationship between perception and imagination. Created as an antidote to stress, I use visually calming forms and optical illusions to imbue a sense of wonder. I work in various media. In my upcycled sculptures, I transform mass-produced consumer goods into organic forms that float at the ceiling, cascade down the wall, and glow in the dark. I also communicate through high-tone and gilded paintings, luminous ink paintings, and fractal-like photographic designs in limited editions of five that are dye-sublimated onto aluminum panels. I often hide tiny positive messages in my art that range from large-scale to miniature, many of which play with light. Through my work, I create opportunities that invite tuning into the present moment and letting everything else disappear as curiosity takes over because everyone benefits when they experience a dopamine release. This feel-good chemical has the power to shift perspective and positively impact the world. I play with perception and imagination through the Fauvist lens in my submitted work. Native color is replaced with tonal cousins, sharing a version of reality that exists in my mind. I love the grandeur of the mountainscape and allow my interpretation to guide my work. This painting has the word “LOVE” snuggled within it as a talisman for what we all want to find within our hearts when we experience the natural world, especially in Winter. May my frozen dreams and abstract realities call Winter’s dual nature to mind and ignite your curiosity! Additional shipping/delivery charges will be handled between artist and buyer after the purchase.
  • oil, resin, intestinal lining on wood panel 80 x 36 x 2" My paintings blend classical techniques with avant-garde mediums and invite us to transcend traditional art's boundaries, encouraging a dialogue between the known and the unknown. I extract flesh from shadow, unveiling the unseen and inviting viewers into a world where the mystical and modern coalesce. In my work, I compose a space for introspection, where viewers can embark on a personal journey to unearth the hidden truths within themselves and the universe they inhabit. Painting becomes a ritual, a conduit for channeling raw and arcane forces from the depths of my subconscious. The deliberate use of texture and pattern engages the senses, compelling viewers to see and feel the complex interplay of elements within my creations. It adds a unique and visceral dimension to my work. The goal is not to elicit a singular interpretation but to create a visual moment that urges reflection on the profound connection between humanity, the natural world, and the divine. My work is a journey into the realms of the soul, where the sacred and the mundane coexist, and the boundaries between life and death blur. Additional shipping/delivery charges will be handled between artist and buyer after the purchase.

  • oil & oil pastel 24 x 20 x 1.5" Flowers of Cost Rica #3 draws inspiration from the captivating allure of Costa Rica's rain forest. Exploring the vibrant beauty of its flora, I was enthralled by kaleidoscope of colors and the mesmerizing shapers. I tried to capture the essence of these unique blossoms, to celebrate how magnificent they are.I created 3 paintings that can be viewed as a triptych or separately. • oil on canvas 20 x 30 x 1" Flowers and landscapes are my passion. Whether working in the garden or enjoying nature, I try to capture the fleeting moment, be it a flower in bloom, trees changing the color of their leaves during the fall, or shrubs with swelling buds during the spring. My camera is always ready in my hands. Millbrook in June, was created after I visited the area. One sunny day during summer, I went there on an excursion and was stunned by the beauty of that place. A man-made lake and the surrounding territory form a picturesque landscape on the outskirts of Millbrook, NY. • oil on canvas 34 x 57" This work is a psychological portrait set in a fantastic reality. I try to remove any remnants of present-day reality. • oil on Arches oil paper, mounted on stretched canvas 30 x 44.5 x 1.25" My concept of the seams of a society, as on a garment, refers to being placed at the edge, marginalized, or disenfranchised, but this can also indicate conditions that hold a people together, that bind. Each of my “Seams” works takes the viewer on a cultural journey. I want you to meet a few of my friends, colleagues, and acquaintances in places I have had the great fortune to visit or to work. I am excited to show how culture and economics shape people’s lives. I hope you can imagine the lives of the people I try to portray. I want to challenge stereotypes in the figurative and cultural depiction of people. In my current series of paintings, I explore the lives of Africans in Karatu, Tanzania, a rural town where I have lived and worked over several summers as a physician. People who work in or are served by the hospital live with the lingering effects of colonialism. They grapple with political, educational, and economic conditions that make it difficult to advance. I have been painting with oil on paper that I mount on canvas. I utilize my own handmade stamps developed from traditional Tanzanian kitenge cloth to print the backgrounds. My goal is to offer you a moment to slow your mind as you imagine the lives of others and explore with me the “Seams of Societies”. Growing up in multiple cultures, and experiencing different sights, sounds and smells, influences my work. Undeniably, my love of fairy tales, fiction, fantasy, and sci-fi seeps through as well. I like to tell stories through my work and infuse it with a bit of levity and humor. • multiple photographs layered in Photoshop 16.5 x 11" Who am I? Who are you? Usually we see ourselves or others from a single perspective--especially in photography. That is why many celebrities feel they must only be photographed from a certain (most flattering) angle. But Picasso understood that even when we are looking at an object, a person we are really seeing everything we know about that individual. He applied this concept especially when depicting his beloveds and his rejected beloveds. I love the idea of multiple images incorporated into a photo, a medium that theoretically only captures a single moment in time. Using the intricate Persian Miniature motifs, I've crafted this piece through silkscreen printing on black velvet, employing the vivid CMYK color palette. The artwork, measuring 39.37 H x 27.55 W, pays homage to the rich artistic heritage of Persia while embracing contemporary techniques. It's a visual journey that bridges the past and present, inviting viewers to appreciate the timeless beauty of Persian culture in a modern context. Through this artwork, I aim to capture the essence of cultural continuity and the enduring allure of Persian aesthetics. • inked plexi plates, printed on rives bfk paper 23 x 24 x 24" As I approached working away from my studio during the Covid 19 'stay at home' order, I worked small, using material that I had at hand, including family debris monoprints, created by layering inked printing plates with my family's ephemeral & permanent cast offs, a record of the mundane and obsolete. After completing a large series of small ‘art in isolation’ mixed media prints, I went 3d, using double sided family debris monoprints as components for building sculptural forms. Folded paper vessels were stitched together to create abstract sculptures that pushed the limits of paper, ink and thread. • oil, colored pencil 17 x 11 x 1.5" My wish is to make connections between things I understand and things I don't. After my daughter's death, I read about the ancient tabernacle in Jerusalem. It had curtains of scarlet, purple, and indigo. I painted circles, triangles, and squares using these colors. In the middle of the painting I placed the letters of her name--b i d u-- copied numerous times onto a white rectangle. Why? I can't say. But this painting evokes a feeling of the sublime for me at a time of upheaval and loss. Additional shipping/delivery charges will be handled between artist and buyer after the purchase.
