  • digital (1 of 10) 8.5 x 11" Creators of many kinds are recognized while incredible artists go unrecognized, have their work undermined, undervalued, and dismissed due to the melanin in their skin. These pieces aim to introduce an important group of rarely recognized artists. These female black fine artists of the 18th & 19th centuries not only sold their work but flourished during decades of our country’s deeply racist and dark underbelly. These women deserved our respect then, and they do now. Edmonia Lewis, Sculptor of stone. Elizabeth Catlett, Fine Artist & Sculptor. • oil on canvas 24 x 18" The painting is based on two stages of a dawn off my back porch, looking over the Salton Sea. Earlier the sky was darker, later, more light comes in. During this time the clouds also change. The two paintings, done on lose canvas, were refractured - cut up and reassembled - mounted on a stretched canvas - to incorporate the two phases. The following poem is written for and painted into the painting: Storm clouds, fluffy clouds All the product of weather, changes are the key.

  • refractured oil with poem
    24 x 20 x 1"
My work is about sky.  We live in the sky, usually at ground level, and it is the most volatile and vibrant part of our world, our every next breath. Refracturing cuts and reassembling the image into the pieces we focus on before our mind stitches it back together to one scene.   My addition of poetry that I write for the skyscape guides the user to the feeling behind the painting.  Sunset brought the proof, this was a beautiful day, it ended in gold.   Additional shipping/delivery charges will be handled between artist and buyer after the purchase.

7.5 x 10.75" It's about time catalogs the journey of my friend as she succumbed to cancer. The handles clock has hours of, for example; 'Stroke', 'Chemotherapy', 'Cancer being held in check', Radiation. The swinging bear the words 'I know the cancer will take me, I just want some more time'. Bending light is inspired by one of the many dawns off my back porch looking east across the Salton Sea. These colors would be from a more humid summer morning, The haiku I wrote for and painted into it reads: Heat rises in waves Land warming sky, bending light into dizziness.

  • 4 refracted watercolors on up-cycled box with poem 6 x 16 x 11"
An old jewelry box was up-cycled - the four surfaces cleaned and 4 refracted watercolors added to correspond with each of the four lines of a poem written for the box. Sky knows the snow will cloak the resting branches Sky knows the tilting of the earth will warm the trees and bring them to life Sky knows the heat of the summer will bring the fruit ready for harvest Sky knows the falling of leaves returns the strength of the tree to the earth for the next year. Most of the other surfaces are just left as they were, to remind the user of the box's previous life. Acrylic glazing makes the box a useable item.

  • oil 22 x 30 x 1" A friend was travelling in Iceland and took a photo of this dawn, while taking a trip to see the waterfalls at Selfoss and Dettifoss. I named it for the falls that sound more like 'Self Loss' because the absorption into this sky is a way to lose yourself. The following words were written for and are painted into it: The Road to Selfoss, the dawn to openness, the sky to everything.

  • Mixed Media Divine Dive Into Consciousness 11.75 x 11.75 in. This piece captures the delicate balance between strength and vulnerability. The figure, falling back into tall grass, embodies the beauty found within us all, inviting a sense of connection to the world around us. His outward-reaching hand encourages us to embrace our authentic selves, while the grass symbolizes the grounding presence of nature. Surrounding him, the grass represents not only our connection to nature but also how nature reaches out to us, inviting us to find solace and refuge. This work explores the fragile strength inherent in self-acceptance, reminding us that true brilliance lies in celebrating our shared humanity and our intrinsic bond with the natural world. • oil 30 x 20 x 1" Resilience Blooms: Surrendering to Growth is an oil painting that encapsulates the transformative journey of self-discovery and healing. At the heart of the artwork stands a woman, symbolizing the collective human experience and the pivotal moment when one realizes their worth and confronts their fears and past traumas. Surrealistically intertwined with the landscape, she signifies that our past is an inseparable part of us, but by facing it, we can foster personal growth and empowerment.

  • Shielded Disbelief Charcoal on Birch Panel Size of Piece: 30 x 20 As an artist, I have found a way to channel my trauma and transform it into something beautiful. Through painting, I have discovered a voice that speaks louder than the pain that once silenced me. My art is not just a depiction of my trauma, it is a manifestation of the strength and resilience I have developed through my journey. In my work, I often use symbolism and surrealism to express the complexities of my experiences. The female form is a recurring motif, representing both vulnerability and power. Through undulating gestures, I aim to convey a sense of movement and fluidity, capturing the ebb and flow of emotions that come with trauma. My art is not just a form of self-expression, it is a means of healing. Painting allows me to confront my past and process my emotions in a way that words cannot. It is through my art that I have found a way to release the pain that once consumed me and transform it into something meaningful. Through my journey as an artist, I have learned that strength is not just about overcoming adversity, but about finding the beauty in the struggle. My art is a reflection of this journey - a testament to the power of creativity and the human spirit. • Rising Up Acrylic on Cradled Wood Size of Piece: 12 x 8 Size of Piece Framed: 13 x 9 I am trying out some new mediums in these small works, using cradled wood and thicker paints as well as portraying the more muted colors of winter. In “Dancing in the Northern Lights” I am using painted clay shapes to contrast the stiffness in the dancing trees with the fluidity of the northern lights behind them. • Oil on Canvas Storm on the Horizon Size: 16 x 20 Framed Size: 17 x 21 Storm on the Horizon was inspired by the anxiety I have been feeling for the past several years. I am always fighting this worry and fear about the future. This started with the COVID epidemic and has never really gone away. The times we live in are so frightening for so many reasons; increasingly common hate filled rhetoric from political figures and their supporters, an increasingly divided country, worsening climate conditions. This painting captures a memory of mine, a day spent climbing through grassy hills with my friend Louise. The rolling fields, blue skies and rocky cliffs that surrounded us are depicted in vibrant colors and bold brushstrokes, capturing the simplicity and beauty of the landscape. The wind softly rustling through the grasses can almost be heard in the delicate swirls and textures of the grass.

I am always wondering what it means to make art at a time when it seems we humans are not up to maintaining the health of our beautiful planet and its creatures. How can I just sit around and make pictures? What I do know is that for me, making art is like being a therapist (my profession for almost fifty years), and is like living life. Everything has a way of falling apart and then gathering together, making form out of the unformulated, continually layering and digging beneath the layers. The complexities of abstraction, color, line, and texture are the tools I employ in my passionate reach for exploration of the not yet imagined.

  • Oil on Canvas Floating on Hope Size: 18 x 36 Framed Size: 19 x 37 I find calm and comfort in the shapes used Mid-century art, particularly by Calder in his mobiles. This is why I am drawn to the leave of the eucalyptus. After a long series of realist still-lifes of these beauties, I began to play with them in the abstract. Here they are floating on what I imagine are good feelings and hope. Additional shipping/delivery charges will be handled between the artist and buyer after the purchase.

10 x 10" Lenten roses are among the first to awaken after the frigidity of winter. These were particularly welcome popping up through the snow. I had intended to refine this further. But after walking away from it for a bit, in what I had thought a somewhat unfinished state, I changed course. The impression imparts the fleetingness of these small wonders.

  • The Moon Rules the Night Watercolor Size: 6 x 4 Framed Size: 10 x 8 My work centers on spaces from my imagination that reflect reality but don’t represent it, much like a dream. While the scale of my watercolors, and therefore interaction with them, is small and personal, my approach to painting both small and large works is similar. Surface tension, brushstroke, and layers of color are equally important no matter the size of the work. I want you to participate when you look at my art - enter the image and place yourself in the space. While my early paintings were primarily figurative, for the most part figures have disappeared from my work. However, a sense of the figure’s presence remains - you are that presence. 6 x 4" This painting is about ordinary commonplace experiences. I have been frustrated more than once by finding that a place I need to go to is closed for repairs. Being a longtime midwesterner, there's a certain look the sky gets in winter when you can feel the snow coming, and a particular beauty to the bareness of the trees.

8 x 10 x .75" Autumn has always been my favorite season, so every autumn I, of course, must do a painting celebrating the season. I sometimes paint other seasons, but autumn is the only one I absolutely have to paint! The Chatter of Leaves evolved into tree trunks with multiple leaves falling everywhere and in my mind making the noises of crisp blowing and tumbling leaves. They speak to me each fall which is why the title The Chatter of Leaves popped into my head and was chosen.

  • Archival watercolor pigments on archival watercolor paper 6.25 x 4 in. Descending Darkness is a small watercolor created right after Russia invaded Ukraine. It was and is my reaction to this tragic and unnecessary situation for the people of Ukraine and consequently the stability of the entire world. Most of the time my work does not reflect world events, but this war was started for invented reasons, which really evoked a physical response in me that worked its way into my painting.

  • Watercolor 8 x 10" My small paintings center on spaces from my imagination that reflect reality but do not represent it, much like a surreal dream. I rarely know where a painting is going when I begin working. I am rather obsessed with the moon, architecture, texture, and pattern. I also enjoy mixing perspective. I want my small, intimate paintings to feel large. This painting, “Garden of the Harvest Moon”, is an abstraction of ideas incorporating my interests in the above areas.

  • watercolor 10 x 8 x .75" Sometimes I have a specific idea for a painting before I begin and sometimes I do not. "Night Whisper" is one where I had no idea when I began where it would end up. This rather surreal watercolor took off on its own. I had no idea the column with the creepy plant-like thing would become the focus of this painting. I also had not planned for daylight to appear in the darkness until I began to paint. My art is always an adventure even for me and I hope is enjoyed.

  • New Year’s Day Oil on Board, Plein Air painting in PA Size: 8 x 10 Oil paints have a delicious, buttery consistency, have various translucencies, and painting makes me happily meditative. Juilliard and Columbia-trained in piano, the arts, and dentistry, I feel that fine art overlaps with great music. Both can evoke feelings of awe, serenity, and happiness. I want to share these emotions through annual piano concerts and my paintings. Transcendent music and art inspires me. I admire work of Inness, Constable, Turner, Tiffany and Parrish. Whether plein air painting or working indoors with an underpainting, I try to capture inner peace and joy through a vista with an atmosphere of this moment. I envision spreading inner joy to a world of viewers. Additional shipping/delivery charges will be handled between the artist and buyer after the purchase.

I love the variety and creative energy of the city but also the hidden places and quiet moments that appear serendipitously in my rambles around the city. My paintings often incorporate dramatic light and perspective to expose the craft and subtle colors of easily overlooked elements of the urban environment. For example, Drain Pipe, Henry Hudson Parkway is a detail of a structure I have painted many times in many lights. This small painting captures a quiet sunset moment under the parkway looking across the river.

Sun on Parkway Arch is one of a series of paintings made in 2022 to 2023 depicting the Henry Hudson Parkway, both within context of the surrounding park and river, and as a stand-alone structure. I was drawn to this particular perspective by the sunlight glancing off the top of the arch and the contrasting shadowed interior, which created a glorious range of warm and cool blues, greens and purples. The curves and lines also created an almost abstract image which I loved.   Additional shipping/delivery charges will be handled between artist and buyer after the purchase.
  • oil on panel 12 x 16" I live near the Hudson River and have walked along it in every season and kind of light. One day I saw this pier from an angle that reminded me of Magritte – so how could I resist it? There were many other things I loved about this image - the contrast of textures in the metal pier, rough stone wall and tall grasses; the glow of the sand uncovered by the tide; and the distant skyline. I used glazes to create the glowing sand, and emphasized the horizontal constructions to contrast with the organic foliage form.

  • 35mm digital image 18 x 12 in. w/frame 26 x 20 in.   The image titled 489 was produced from a 35mm digital image. Other than saving it a jpg no other actions took place in Photoshop. The image was captured on an early July morning at a local kayak shop. The bright, colorful design shows the reflection of a rack of kayaks on the side of a glossy black box trailer. I could not resist the playful, abstract shapes that changed forms with every step as I approached. The pattern of the black panel rivets creates a repeating rhythm to the design.   Additional shipping/delivery charges will be handled between the artist and buyer after the purchase.
  • Print Making Size: 8 x 9 x 0 Frame Size: 14 x 18 x 0 The moving body captures and expresses defiance, joy, and energy as actual and metaphoric practice allows breaking through obstacles; mental, physical or spiritual. • collage on clayboard with sgraffito 16.5 x 13.5" I used to have students render statues. As demonstrations, I started using the truncated female torso in my own work, repeating variations in different media- watercolor, oil pastel, woodblock printing, and more. This reflected thoughts about aging- how a statue can lose parts over long periods of time. What may once have been adulated in youth has changed and is now attractive in very different ways. This art piece uses the same torso shape repeated throughout the series, and adds a portion of a cotton lace curtain from my first home that finally fell apart. It is dipped in encaustic wax, which preserves it. The line work scratched in the clayboard suggests breaking of bonds or barriers.

  • printmaking 5.25 x 6" Printmaking has a huge number of subcategories. Among other techniques, I enjoy both carving plates (as in linoleum, gomuban or woodblock) and inscribing them (as on metal or plexiglas). Then of course, next comes printing them in varied colors, combinations or papers, sometimes adding another medium, such as watercolor. Inspirations are varied, often reflecting the moment of time, place and activity, whether domestic, nature, sport or music. Engaging in artistic reflection is a way to improve observation, capture a memory, and invite a viewer to see through one's eyes. • monoprint with watercolor 18 x 24"   Loie Fuller was a pioneer modern dancer, or “free dance,” as it was called in early days. She was born Marie Louise Fuller in 1862 in my home state of Illinois and renamed herself “Loie” at age 16. She was filmed in 1902, perhaps the first film of a dancer. I imagined her perhaps in a mirror, or doing a duet with herself, in this monoprint. This print, on Hannemuhle paper, was created from a plexiglass plate with a dremel, inked as an intaglio print and subsequently hand watercolored. It is an homage to Ms. Fuller, her history, the joy of dance and the dancing days of my youth- Jill Cliffer-Baratta   Additional shipping/delivery charges will be handled between artist and buyer after the purchase.

Borrowing the lake house of a friend, and taking time away from the usual, a group of my friends gathered on Keuka Lake in the Finger Lakes region of New York State, for fun and adventure. This image of the house reflected in the lake, is the view from a kayak. The friends (not shown but having stayed together in the house) are those from high school, and the reflections may represent how time breaks up the memories, as well as how moving water, like time, breaks up the reflections. The more friends, the more broken memories may be stitched back together, especially when some go back to elementary school!
