Taken Raspberry Alabaster Size of Piece: 17 x 13 x 10 One night in April, 2014, 276 schoolgirls in Chibok, Nigeria were kidnapped by a terrorist group called Boko Haram. This horrific news transfixed me and I made my sculpture, 'Taken', in response. I worked on the piece for months as their story remained alive for me, even as it faded in the news. In the time since, the 'Me Too' movement has publicized the global pervasiveness of sexual abuse, violence and repression. Artworks should hold the mirror, too. The year 2020 brought profound loss, touching lives directly and indirectly, leaving us with broken hearts. As we grieve and mend, we carry the memories of our loved ones, finding strength in the process of stitching together what remains. When I began this series, the compositions were infused with affirmations and quotes about loss—words that remind us how to carry on while holding those we've lost close to our hearts. These pieces speak to the unseen yet felt presence of our loved ones, always beside us, guiding and watching over us. In my own life, I’ve had moments where I narrowly escaped harm and felt the comforting, heavenly presence of my mother. These experiences inspired the affirmations embedded in this series. Roebling, the architect of the Brooklyn Bridge. Roebling was the inventor of the suspension cable and needed to test the cables to make sure they were strong enough to sustain a bridge. It is like a resurrection of sorts that becomes apparent gradually. Spirits run high as the days get longer and the sun shines brighter. My work reflects the joy I feel during spring resurrection. My painting was created with watercolor and gouache on 140lb cold press paper and then mounted onto cradleboard with heavy gel medium. It is preserved with gallery series, Acid-free, UV protected, non-yellowing, matt spray varnish that also repels dirt and moisture.

The mother in this painting represents countless women who, despite their terror, stand firm in their instinct to protect. In my creative process, I use heavy, dark colors in the background to symbolize destruction and turmoil. At the same time, the softer, more delicate details of the mother and child convey their fragility. The palette contrast represents the merging of fear, hope, and desperation. In this small village, Point Judith, located on the coast of Rhode Island, several fishing boats were moored to the pier. I have always been attracted by the atmospheric old boats peacefully moored on the water. At this moment, they were shrouded in fog, giving the place a more romantic character. Having stopped, I made a sketch and some photos, finishing the painting later in my studio.

fresco, salvaged wood on panel 30 x 24" I’m constantly “puzzling” pieces together, whether in the studio, in nature, or in an urban environment; repeatedly picking things up and rearranging them. I’m fascinated with the interplay of contrasting materials and, at times, the contrast within those very materials. In this work, there is a juxtaposition of warm and cool colors, as well as warm and cool materials. There is also a juxtaposition within the elements, with the warmer colors in the cool, smooth texture of the plaster, and the cooler color in the warm, rough texture of the wood. From these relationships, a dialogue is born. I think this dialogue is what enables a work to resonate as both simple and complex, simultaneously.

The moon being a symbol of enlightenment and the water referring to the human mind freed of the obscuration of incessant thinking, thus becoming like an empty, open mirror able to clearly reflect the true nature of reality, allowing the direct experience of one's own true nature. oil on canvas 54 x 48 x 1.25" Immersing myself in my painting process, leaving no room for thinking, I work spontaneously in an intuitive moment-to-moment way without knowing what the end result will be. Then comes a moment when the whole thing comes together and an inner voice shouts, "YES!". It is done. Stepping back and fully taking in what has emerged, my deep response suggests a title that is surprising, something I never would have "thought" of, yet feels so right. My title for this painting is a phrase that the Japanese Zen Master Dogen (1200-1253) uses as a metaphor in his "Mountains and Rivers Sutra" to refer to the whole network of interdependent origination in which we are all constantly coming and going. The whole universe is continually changing and we are one with this movement.

There in the pond hidden in plain sight was this frog, half submerged in the water. The color and light drew caught my attention, but also the subject matter. As I painted the frog, it made me think about people and how we humans also hide in plain sight for similar reasons. Have you ever played "hide and go seek"?

“Illumine” is part of a body of work (“Remembered Land”) which is inspired by my distant memories of the beautiful English countryside of my childhood - the numinous mood and atmosphere that I sensed as a child, the feeling of transcendental harmony with the natural world, and the eternal lacuna between memory and myth. “Illumine” goes beyond what we see with the naked eye, embracing the philosophy of tonalist pictorialism. Elements of emotionalism and romanticism emphasize expression, mood, and mystery through the use of color, light, shadow, soft focus, and atmospheric perspective. This piece belongs to a body of work in which I reimagined found twigs as trees with small local birds in their branches, but the piece of dried vine that became the body and legs for this piece was so clearly destined to be part of a complete, though abstract, human body that I was happy to make an exception to the tree limitation. The Undoing of Beinggraphite & colored pencil on paperA deteriorating, decomposing stump of a felled tree is superimposed on a landscape. The extreme physicality of the stump engages and thrusts the experience directly into the viewer's space. Title refers to the collapse of a physical system into increasing levels of disorder and uncertainty. It calls attention to time in a deep sense as well as attention to the destruction of our natural environment. The mesmeric process of careful observation utilizing many grades of graphite pencils is a time-consuming detailed approach where textures are always visible and pulsating with life. At the same time, my technique is a metaphor for embracing the moment. It’s fascinating to me to work with the basic material of the earth – what was once life – to create works that are completely integrated with the images.
