Before I laid my first stroke on this canvas, I reflected on the unexpected gift hidden within contracting Lyme disease in 2012. Arthritic pain in my hands ended my ability to finish a screenplay I had spent two years writing about my lifelong journey with my face. After thirty years helping women heal the emotional pain surrounding their appearance, I had hoped to tell that story on the silver screen. Losing the ability to type was devastating. Yet those same hands that could no longer manage a keyboard could still hold a palette knife. Though formally trained as a realist, I rediscovered painting as an expressionist.
