Thoughts Nebula mixed media on wood panel Size of Piece: 12 x 12 x 2 Thoughts Nebula embodies the lunar archetype — the reflective, cyclical force that has guided human timekeeping since the first calendars aligned women’s bodies with the moon. Through my practice of Temporal Psychoexpressionism, I build each piece stroke by stroke, counting time as both meditation and record. Fresco-like textures, watercolor, and gold accents create a portal for resonance: the moon here is not astronomical but archetypal, a luminous portrait of intuition, reflection, and eternal cycles. Cathy Lazar is a fiber artist living in Northern New Jersey. At age 14, she studied with Walter Nottingham at Haystack Hinckley School of Crafts. She received a degree in Textile Design at the Rhode Island School of Design. After graduating, Cathy brought Kermit and Miss Piggy to life at the Muppet Workshop. Soon after, she founded Cathy Lazar Costumes and Soft Props, producing three-dimensional works for Claes Oldenburg, Bruce Springsteen, SNL, Laurie Simmons…She constructed over-sized objects for iconic brands such as Reebok, Oreo, and Elizabeth Arden. Cathy was introduced to mosaics in 1992. In her Shardonnay Mosaic Studio she has mentored women and girls for over 25 years. In 2018, Cathy returned to her textile roots, creating art quilts. I spent an hour capturing them from different perspectives, ultimately focusing on the spiral pattern at the very top of the bloom. This overhead view emphasizes the bold fuchsia color, geometric structure, and natural symmetry of this tropical flower. Placing the image against a black background—my signature approach to floral portraits—transforms the living plant into a sculptural study that reveals the universal beauty found in nature's diverse forms.

Red Pepper Autopsy oil on canvas Size of Piece: 16 x 16 x 1.5 My subject matter often references the human form, gesture, memory, emotion, and sensuality. “Red Pepper Autopsy” has been fueled by the culinary action of cutting into red peppers. I am viscerally excited by the disembowelment of peppers, their flesh, and seeds. I celebrate the red energy and plump life of this vegetable and always savor its taste. I ingest this experience and then synthesize it into my own expression. My use of paint is visceral. I have an appetite for color and enjoy the manipulation of paint that grabs the eye and stirs the unconscious. "Window Beyond" acrylic on board, papers, inks, stabillos Size of Piece: 16 x 16 x 1.5 When I began this piece, I had just put down some color and marks on the canvas. When a shadow from the window behind me fell across the surface. I liked the way the shadow portrayed the windowpanes. I let that moment guide the piece, weaving in layered paper to echo both structure and light. I often see the moon or the morning light as it peeks in whenever I am working and used this as inspiration. The result seemed to tell of a view from within looking out and wondering if the view from outside was as stirring as the view from within. I graduated from the University of California San Diego with a double major in art and cinema, then worked as a camera assistant in movies for 20 years while showing my ceramics at LA galleries. I began painting in oil and creating collage during the pandemic and received so much encouragement that I opened my studio in 2023.
My first year as a professional artist, I was awarded an Emerging Artist Fellowship by the California Arts Council. I also had my first international showing at the International Exhibition at the Tokyo Metropolitan Art Museum, with one work winning an "Award of Excellence" and the other a "Gold Award" (the highest honor). I've gone on to win Gold Awards in the same show in 2024 and 2025 and show internationally

Contemporary women icons studied were Sheila Hicks, Olga de Amarel, Lenore Tawney, Claire Zeisler and Adela Akers just to name a few. There were very few men making their mark with fiber as historically it was “women’s work”. Relegated to “craft” rather than “fine art” further denigrated this art form.
ABSTRACTION was and still is a key component in the Fiber Arts. These explorations of form, texture, pattern and color is my life-long study and practice. It was a natural progression for me to continue to investigate these qualities of abstraction when I pivoted from fiber to paint and canvas.
This piece is part of a new body of work applying my deep roots to fiber to abstract painting.

The Great Divide

My color palette is inspired by colors of nature, with contrast created by the juxtaposition of texture and media. I hand paint and print natural fabrics with acrylics and watercolor. Color families emerge, a collage begins, and I begin to stitch.
The Great Divide was created using an intuitive process. I created a balanced composition with hand printed papers, commercial fabrics and painted fabrics. The botanical square is a gel print; the cheesecloth "fabric" is acrylic paint using unconventional mark making tools. Once I established my collage, I began to use thread as structure and mark making. The strong diagonal is my Great Divide.

I’m not sure where it came from, but I knew I was supposed to explore using leather in my work and see where it took me. I have fully leaned into it. I love working with the organic edges and unique shapes of the leather. I enjoy the challenge of arranging the pieces into a composition to tell a story or evoke a feeling or vibe.

Besides using precious metals and stones in my work I developed techniques to add color and form with alternative material, particularly epoxy resin. My work is included in several museum collections including the Renwick in Washington D.C., the Cooper-Hewitt National design Museum in NY, the Victoria & Albert Museum in London, the Newark Museum and others as well as private collections. I started painting seriously for my own enjoyment several years ago. I joined a local art group and have been showing my work in local shows.I look forward to continuing doing so as a NAWA member. I’ve always been obsessed this Russian fable nested within an American context, and felt compelled to paint it. It is as if I could have no peace until I did it, and I am sure it expresses some kind of deep anxiety I have, probably about marriage or sexual politics or gendered vulnerability. The Living Room Size of Piece: 9.5 x 12.5 x .5The Living Room began as a pencil drawing of my own space—structured, representational, familiar. Layering acrylic paint and oil pastels, I wondered: can anything literal be abstracted, and why does that matter? As the work evolved, lines softened, forms unraveled, and the room itself dissolved into color, gesture, and memory. What began as a place became a question—about perception, emotion, and the shifting point where reality yields to abstraction.
