Sky Eyes Mother SKY EYES MOTHER - This oil painting is from my Vanishing Women series.: Sky Eyes Mother is about femicide and violence against women My beautiful niece disappeared in 2016. My sister's eyes have become the infinite sky as she continues to hold her sleeping child. The sacred drum beats a warning - calling attention to the continuing tragedy of missing and murdered Indigenous women and girls. Note the corn on left. This is Corn Mother, the mother of the people. I am an multidisciplinary artist of Abenaki descent. I use indigenous iconography and ancient narratives to comment on contemporary social issues. My paintings explore the liminal space between abstraction and representation, mother and landscape, spectacle and solitude. Legacy watermedia on arches wc paper Watermedia allows me to explore the beauty of nature in all of its forms. The spontaneity, unpredictability, and serendipitous journey I take each time I layer watermedia motivates my continuous exploration of this unique medium. Incredible contrasts of light/dark, warm/cool, transparent and opaque reveal new patterns, symbols and shapes inviting further definition and mark making. Mother's Helper I saw the cool winter light shining through the kitchen window. It reminded me of Vermeer paintings I was so familiar with. I couldn't help but want to replicate that feeling. Using my new favorite medium, watercolor, and my granddaughter as my model, I proceeded to act upon that impulse, creating the painting, "Mother's Helper." Lady with a dog Lady with a dog -ceramic sculpture was inspired by famous and sad love story written by famous russian writer Anton Chekhov and my love for the dogs also. The size of sculpture was determine of the kiln size i had access to. The hat of the lady was created separately and can be removed. Boxed "Boxed" is my story of isolation. Painted at the tail end of the pandemic, I feel it applies univarsally to all feelings of isolation. The viewer of this painting is repeatedly drawn down into a deep box, but then urged upward into the open ends, evoking feelings of hope and release. Still Life: Green and Orange Study Size: 18 x 24 I am constantly hoarding; filling my studio with empty plastic bottles and discarded packaging. I commemorate these objects through painting before I let them go. My work investigates consumerism, environmentalism, and sentimentality under the framework of Western still-life painting traditions. However, I reach for formal haphazardness, letting my eyes wander around the dark, messy corners of my studio until they land naturally on interesting moments. I then zoom in and out of this potential composition, not moving anything but rather adjusting my own body’s placement in relation to what is already there. I transform candy wrappers and tabletops into odd, illogical spaces. The result is a traffic jam of bottles and forgotten Post-It notes, rendered almost unintelligible. I paint from life in oil paint, experimenting with colorful lighting. Though I am looking intensely at the tableau set before me, I am an unreliable narrator, creating visual puzzles and selective realities. Quilt Top Study: Into the Woods Size: 14 x 11.5 My "Quilt Top Studies" pay tribute to the module workers in my family, masons and quiltmakers, whose influence made me receptive to early palpable, systemic Conceptual Art. My sculpture, acrylic shaped canvas constructions in installation, collages and prints have resulted from this synthesis. Alley in Bloom Size: 8 x 10 Inspired by the quiet charm of Italian alleys, this painting layers wax and pigment to evoke cobblestones, flowering windows, and the final glow of sunset. Resilience:Liza Davis Size: 33 x 17 We all face and suffer challenges that emanate from fear, loss, trauma, and personal obstacles. These trials can leave behind scars, darkness, weakness and doubt. Instead of letting these trying experiences break us down, we should allow them to be the driving force behind fortifying our inner soul, in order to achieve our deepest goals, desires, and dreams. Ambition is not tainted or broken by these barriers. We gain the ability to develop and grow as we absorb and advance through life’s arduous lessons. We transform as we utilize these burdensome stepping stones as a foundation to recover, rebuild and succeed. I used chiaroscuro to capture this concept in my piece. Water illustrates a reflection of our inner self, personal emotions, thoughts, and how others may perceive us. Peacock feathers and butterflies represent rebirth, wisdom, strength, love, and embracing hope and freedom. This piece symbolizes a journey and metamorphosis through, and as a result of, personal hardships. A transformation occurs through time and change, by healing and cleansing, as we conquer our dreams, achieve our goals, and tell a magnificent story of our triumphs and victories. To date, this piece gained acceptance into the CPSA 33 International Exhibition in CA, awarded the Evelyn Greenspan Award for Drawing in the CLWAC’s 127^th Exhibition in NY, Honorable Mention in the Almenara 2024 Art Prize in Spain and published in Strokes of Genius 17. Dynamic Interplay Size: 36 x 36 I have been working with gesture, capturing a moment in time. This painting emerged from those efforts, somewhat as a surprise. As every artist knows, sometimes your intentions occur without struggle and it is time to stop and go with the image before you. Approaching Storm, Marina Day's End Size: 9 x 12 This was an Adirondacks plein air location, on Lake Champlain as a storm approached at the of the day. Boats rushed in and then tied up tight and sudden quiet tension, bracing for the storm. I worked to get it done and dismantle the easel before the first drop of rain. Benedum Size: 20 x 16 This is a street view of the Benedum Center for the Performing Arts located in downtown Pittsburgh Pennsylvania. It really could be any city’s skyline on a beautiful night with stars in the sky and twinkling lights reflecting in a fountain. I took the picture which led to the painting with the hopes of capturing the excitement in the air before a thrilling performance. My technique of using palette knives to spread the oil paint on the canvas enables me to stay loose with undefined edges letting the minds eye complete the structure. Oil paint is the perfect medium for applying layers to create texture that adds movement and definition. The dark moody colors let the electric lights glow. Shedding Birch Bark Size: 14 x 11 In the spring when trees are in bloom all around our home, I am always intrigued by watching their leaves and flowers grow. In an area near our house we have White Birch trees, and the shedding of the bark has always fascinated me. It reminds me of snakes shedding their skin. Ths process for birch trees is a natural process as the trunk expands and makes way for new growth. The colors and shapes of the shedding bark are so colorful amd interesting. Poetry Size: 28 x 22 Walking in New Orleans, I was delighted to see poets busking, the way musicians do. People lined up to buy their poems, written for them on the spot. The poem I received was a beautiful reflection on the subject of daughters. I was inspired to make this painting in tribute to the work of poets.
