Nature has always provided my soul with comfort and peace. I seek those moments to be present in a natural environment to experience joy. Visiting a nearby park with the it’s blossoming cherry trees offered me an opportunity to capture a fleeting moment of solace and enchantment.   Additional shipping/delivery charges will be handled between artist and buyer after the purchase.
  • oil on canvas
    20 x 24 x 0.7"
This piece draws its inspiration from the enchanting sounds of nature at night. Picture a captivating symphony orchestrated by the chorus of small creatures, a melodic masterpiece with no clear beginning or end. This harmonious composition sweeps everyone into a dance, casting a luminous glow upon the surroundings. In the heart of this auditory spectacle, I envisioned a diminutive creature perched delicately upon a leaf. With a magical touch, it plays an ethereal melody, weaving the nocturnal symphony into a mesmerizing tapestry of sound and light.   Additional shipping/delivery charges will be handled between artist and buyer after the purchase.

Transformation, connections, shadow and light are themes that I explore in my artistic practice. My work is constructed in layers that I keep apart allowing the shadows created by the change of light to become a vital part of the artwork. The shadows visually mingle with the two layers creating a labyrinthine image and revealing kaleidoscopic forms of interconnected microcosms. Strolleroptera is a word that I created combining English word "stroller" and the word "ptera" meaning "wings" in Greek.   Additional shipping/delivery charges will be handled between artist and buyer after the purchase.

"When I was young I remember my Mom talking about the Women's Rights Movement. Even as a child I understood that we all deserved to be treated equally so figured the movement would succeed. So, I focused on the need to protect the environment and animals. Half a century later, women are still treated as second class citizens struggling for our inherent rights and we are in the middle of an extinction crisis. What is to be done? One thing that can be done is to create Art that exposes the unbalanced way of thinking that drives inequality and the destruction of environment and wildlife." - Kathleen Zimmerman   Additional shipping/delivery charges will be handled between artist and buyer after the purchase.

Sun on Parkway Arch is one of a series of paintings made in 2022 to 2023 depicting the Henry Hudson Parkway, both within context of the surrounding park and river, and as a stand-alone structure. I was drawn to this particular perspective by the sunlight glancing off the top of the arch and the contrasting shadowed interior, which created a glorious range of warm and cool blues, greens and purples. The curves and lines also created an almost abstract image which I loved.   Additional shipping/delivery charges will be handled between artist and buyer after the purchase.

In Breaking Through the Matrix, I explore the complexities of our conditioned perceptions and the struggle to break free from the confines of a familiar narrative. This mixed-media piece combines painting, texture, and symbolism to convey a profound narrative of liberation and restraint. At the heart of the artwork is a figure, painted in deep green tones, standing resolutely amidst the expanse of a tranquil lake. This figure represents the individual, immersed in the vastness of existence yet tethered to the constructs of their surroundings. The green hues symbolize growth, renewal, and the ever-present desire for liberation. Embedded within the artwork are delicate gemstones and chains.   Additional shipping/delivery charges will be handled between artist and buyer after the purchase.

This painting was prompted by my walks in southwest Florida this Spring, when the weather is perfect and color abounds. I enjoy getting lost in the tropical forests of Audubon's Corkscrew Swamp Sanctuary and the Naples Botanical Gardens, often getting "caught in the nettles" and savoring the flora and wildlife of our region -- bobcats, the endangered FL panther, alligators, and wonderful birds. I journal my experiences, writing a verse as I paint out my impressions and memories of these ventures.   Additional shipping/delivery charges will be handled between artist and buyer after the purchase.

This still life is composed of an especially beautiful chinese tea pot that I could not resist painting. It is accompanied by lemons and tea leaves and painted on canvus in acrylic. The genesis of my piece titled Sunset Rays lies in a moment of serendipity driving along the highway. The sunlight pierced through the clouds in a manner that felt transcendent. Aware of the fleeting nature of such scenes, I was compelled to capture and preserve it as a painting. I find inspiration in the natural world, translating its essence into art using soft pastels. My creative process extends beyond simple observation; it involves capturing the vibrant interplay of colors, the flowing elegance of lines, and dynamic arrangement of shapes within the realm of light and shadow. Whether it's the ordinary or the extraordinary, I endeavor to encapsulate the ephemeral beauty I witness.   Additional shipping/delivery charges will be handled between artist and buyer after the purchase.

When photographing wildlife I look for motion and expression in my subjects. I often drive three hours or more to a wildlife area only to find the wildlife doesn’t cooperate! That was the case on the day I photographed this Great Blue Heron. The Heron personifies stoicism and resoluteness, as a gust of wind ruffles his feathers. His windswept feathers created the motion I needed to make the photo more engaging.   Additional shipping/delivery charges will be handled between artist and buyer after the purchase.

I find it fascinating how the light quality, colors and cloud formations dramatically change on a windy or stormy day. In minutes you can see dark to vibrant colors and go from cloudy to open skies. This painting comes from a ongoing series looking to the sky, trying to capture the vibrancy and moods that sweep in and out.   Additional shipping/delivery charges will be handled between artist and buyer after the purchase.

No Tension is the beginning of a series around the idea of resilience. We have gone through and will continue to go through difficulties in our lives but I believe we have the strength to keep going and can do so with grace and beauty. Wrapping, stitch, paint and quiet marks are all evidence of our sensitivity which contributes to our resilience.   Additional shipping/delivery charges will be handled between artist and buyer after the purchase.

Squaring the Circle- Structure is dancing with the intuitive, both are needed. The expression "squaring the circle" is sometimes used as a metaphor for trying to do the impossible. A women’s work is never done. Mindfulness is key. If you say that someone squares the circle, you mean that they bring together two things, which are normally thought to be so different that they cannot exist together. Mathematically, it has to do with irrational and rational numbers and mathematicians have been working on it since ancient Greece. A woman’s world today is complicated. The circle and spiral are in many ways more home than the square, but we live in a square world of houses and books and cities.   Additional shipping/delivery charges will be handled between artist and buyer after the purchase.

As the saying goes "when you know better, you do better", and I've applied that philosophy to my paintings, many of which I've repainted/reclaimed and turned into something completely different. I'm the only one who knows what the underpainting looked like--and most of that gets covered up (as in this painting Dressed Up) with a combination of acrylic paint and stenciling. I never know what the finished piece will look like, and that is what keeps the process exciting and interesting for me. There is always more than meets the eye!   Additional shipping/delivery charges will be handled between artist and buyer after the purchase.
  • oil on canvas
    24 x 22 x 1"
The composition for this painting was inspired by the view from my campsite at Buffalo Gap Campground, part of the Dakota Prairie National Grasslands, during a road trip in September 2020. The mood and quality of the sky and sunset, though, borrowed from every sacrifice I have made in life. Whether I realized it at the time or not, each of those sacrifices involved a kind of faith. Sometimes, often much later, that faith can seem so foolish -- if not designed to deceive. However, this painting does not connote anger at that cycle, but rather peace.   Additional shipping/delivery charges will be handled between artist and buyer after the purchase.

Experiencing the vast rural spaces of unexplored lands of the Burren, County Clare, Ireland, I climbed upon the rocky limestone land, formed of great slabs of rock that were once the sea bed of an ocean millions of years ago. Dotted throughout that rocky surface I found ancient Neolithic monuments like the Poulnabrone Dolmen, one of Ireland’s most iconic and oldest dated megalithic archeological monuments, a portal tomb consisting of two large vertical stones standing on either side of an entrance capped with a massive sloping capstone.   Additional shipping/delivery charges will be handled between artist and buyer after the purchase.
  • cast handmade rag paper wall sculpture
    30 x 16 x 2"
I am inspired by undulating forces of nature: the formation of rocks eroded by wind and water and the shapes of organic forms. My sculpture addresses the interior and exterior of form by abstracting movement, force and tension. I explore the thought process revealing multilevel reflections of my inner self and collaborations between nature and culture. As an artist one of my communicative functions is to create awareness and reflect concerns for the natural world. Human intervention with nature has caused tension. I believe that with awareness, there is hope. Collaboration between nature and culture can effectively illuminate and channel proactive thoughts and change.   Additional shipping/delivery charges will be handled between artist and buyer after the purchase.

Conjuration is the act of calling upon, invoking or summoning a spirit, ghosts, demons, gods or other supernatural beings by means of a magic ritual. The central figure is the powerful Conjuror. In the right hand the figure is holding a feather and in the left has captured one of the 7 sister stars of the Pleiades. The conjuror is surrounded by a golden halo and has a white eagle on the head. According to legends the feather will blow in the wind & carry prayers to the Creator evoking the spirits bringing rain & keeping harmful entities at bay. The white eagle connects to the spiritual side and is a sign of a spiritual teacher. I wanted this painting to be spiritually evocative.   Additional shipping/delivery charges will be handled between artist and buyer after the purchase.
  • colored pencil
    22.5 x 15"
My artwork is a straightforward sharing of what I see in the world around me, whether it is my family and the traditions we share, or nature including rivers, lakes, rocks, and plants. Portrait work often captures a grandchild. Nature work is usually inspired by the lake area in northern Wisconsin where we have a family lake house, and by the gardens and trees of the Morton Arboretum in Lisle, Illinois, or by public gardens I visit on trips. I want the viewer to see the beauty of those places, to smell the scent of flowers and hear the rush of a river depicted in my work. Wisteria and Hydrangea depicts plants at the Morton Arboretum.   Additional shipping/delivery charges will be handled between artist and buyer after the purchase.

Sadako Sasaki was a Japanese girl who was born in Yamaguchi, Japan. When she was two years old, she was at home about one mile away from ground zero, when the United States dropped an atomic bomb on Hiroshima. Sadako was blown out of the window and her mother ran outside to find her, suspecting she may be dead, but instead found her two-year-old daughter alive with no apparent injuries. While they were fleeing the atomic blast, Sadako and her mother were caught in black rain. She survived for another ten years, becoming one of the most widely known "hibakusha" -- a Japanese term meaning "bomb-affected person" and later died of malignant lymph gland leukemia in 1955.   Additional shipping/delivery charges will be handled between artist and buyer after the purchase.
  • bronze (direct cast from modified twigs)
    18 x 7 x 5.5"
This piece belongs to a body of work in which I reimagined found twigs as trees with small local birds in their branches, but the piece of dried vine that became the body and legs for this piece was so clearly destined to be part of a complete, though abstract, human body that I was happy to make an exception to the tree limitation.   Additional shipping/delivery charges will be handled between artist and buyer after the purchase.
  • mixed media
    13.25 x 13.25 x 3"
Recycled is an abstract expression—a personal, yet universal language—which combines concept with experience. It is many things at once. Technically: It is a mixed-media painting, a “combine” of painting with sculpture together with a collage of found, repurposed and recycled objects. Conceptually: It’s a puzzle, a design, a color way, a magical mystery to explore and decode thoughts and ideas about “recycling”. Physically: It is constructed from acrylic paint, watercolor crayon, archived with newly-created palette skins and found objects. All of these elements take direction from the Muses of the Imagination.   Additional shipping/delivery charges will be handled between artist and buyer after the purchase.
  • monotype with stenciling
    22 x 30"
Babylon is located between the Euphrates and the Tigris rivers in present-day Iraq. Excavations have been described as the surgical aspect of archaeology: it is surgery of the buried landscape. Aerial views of digs (before drone photography) were typically line drawings of the site. This monotype transforms a sketch into a colorful representation of the excavation of Babylon. It was created by inking handmade paper plates and running the print through an etching press. Stencils define the rivers and create the rhythm of the landscape. Several passes through the press are made to achieve the final image.   Additional shipping/delivery charges will be handled between artist and buyer after the purchase.
  • marble
    26 x 7 x 8"
In my work, I have at times carved female figures in place of traditional male figures, sometimes with animal attributes, like horns. Nyami Nyami shows here the face of a woman, with a snake tightly wrapped around her body. She bears the name of an African river god portrayed traditionally as a snake. The construction of the Kariba Dam on the Zambezi River in the 1950’s caused the forced resettlement of an entire population under the British rule. Today, this piece is a call for environmental protection. It is meant to bring attention to the many indigenous sites that are threatened by pipelines, mining and human greed throughout the world.   Additional shipping/delivery charges will be handled between artist and buyer after the purchase.
  • brown bags & acrylic collage on canvas
    21 x 17 x 1"
This collage was inspired by a hike through the gorgeous landscape of Mt. Rainier, WA. I paint ordinary bags with acrylic, tear them into myriad pieces, which I then hand apply with matte medium to realize my vision. Inspired by nature’s beauty, my interest in this medium relates to the cycle of life and nature. The bags start out as trees, are made into paper bags, which I recycle, paint, tear, and collage into the image of the natural world which provided the original inspiration and energy.   Additional shipping/delivery charges will be handled between artist and buyer after the purchase.

Magic Tree was initially a plein-air painting inspired by morning sunlight passing through an ornamental tree. It was developed further in the studio, but the sensation of the intense, low light and delicate bone structure of the tree was the feeling I hoped to convey. Using oil paint on a metal substrate allows reflectiveness at different angles when viewing the painting. This is a work that is all about light.   Additional shipping/delivery charges will be handled between artist and buyer after the purchase.
  • acrylic on wood panel
    20 x 16"
The Forest Inscapes came about accidentally, as I was experimenting with dripping paint on wood panels. I had used dripping extensively in my large Erosion paintings, in which the drips formed veils of color. In a smaller format, the columns of paint looked like trees. Thus were born the Forest Inscapes, which have evolved to reflect the seasons in the forest around my studio. Forest Inscape #28 is an interpretation of the glittering effect of early evening light seen through the screen of forest foliage.   Additional shipping/delivery charges will be handled between artist and buyer after the purchase.

27 x 27 x 1" With peace among people in a constant state of flux between the powerful and the vulnerable, our outlook on life can seem dull. This painting created outdoors in the shade by the seashore among the brambles and weeds, is a personification of my thoughts related to world events. Like the Romantic painters, I use nature and its glory to highlight what is great and acknowledge tragedies and our fragility.

  • wax pastel on paper
24 x 18 x 1.5" It was a traumatic summer. I was 8 years old when I was sexually assaulted by a stranger in a movie theater. There was no one to talk to about this. I kept it to myself. My childhood self was so strong, and imagination and creativity were her saving graces. Artwork became a way to both contain and express emotions that might otherwise have overwhelmed me, and it transformed pain into beauty.

27 x 26 x 1" This collaged wall hanging is a continuation of my previous work about soul guardians. In my vision, these protectors carry our life's narrative in boat-like vessels where they rest while we proceed on our one true path. The title is inspired by a quote from Joseph Campbell.

20 x 20 x 1.5" Science and reason explaining our Earthly origins reveal "we" are truly "one" with the universe.   All physical things derive from the same elemental building blocks making us ... all the same. The division is an illusion, that peace and love exists somewhere out there. These series paintings dissolve what keeps us apart and depict diverse beings meeting joyfully and peacefully together, whether they travel through time, space or through our mind.

18  x 14  x 1" I was inspired by a traditional Irish session at the famous Cobblestone pub in Dublin, Ireland. As an irish fiddler myself, I often attend these sessions. I love how music brings people and friends together. I enjoyed getting to know the wonderful musicians and the gentle guide dog that afternoon, and decided to capture the essence of the scene by painting this pastel piece. I have a unique approach to colors. My work depicts the subtle lights, reflections and hidden hues on the subjects. My goal as an artist is always to share the joy of art with my audience. My creative process has been documented as time-lapse videos on Instagram @fangsullivan.

8 x 10 x .75" Autumn has always been my favorite season, so every autumn I, of course, must do a painting celebrating the season. I sometimes paint other seasons, but autumn is the only one I absolutely have to paint! The Chatter of Leaves evolved into tree trunks with multiple leaves falling everywhere and in my mind making the noises of crisp blowing and tumbling leaves. They speak to me each fall which is why the title The Chatter of Leaves popped into my head and was chosen.

  • cotton threads stitched on linen blend fabric, polyester batting, ink, needles, pins, and images of historic immigration ephemera printed on cloth
17.5 x 24 x 1.5" Long Hours, Hard Work, 1920 is one of a series of narrative works about the lives of immigrant women who came to New York from many cultures. They had the strength and courage to leave their familiar home towns in the hope of a better life for their children. Often their own lives were made even more difficult by this choice, but the lives of their children and grandchildren benefited from their sacrifices. The hand-sewn fabric is a tactile reference to the generations of anonymous, poorly-paid immigrant women who labored in New York City’s Garment District.

This painting is inspired by remembered tulips whose magic and beauty in their fullness of bloom touched me emotionally. This painting, as with much of my work, evolved over time through my passionate interest in investigating and exploring the tools of painting, including color and textures and also line, shape patterns and layering -in service of expressing the magic and joy of nature's creations. I seek to create paintings which create magic and have an emotional resonance. I want my paintings to invite the viewer to enter, wander around, and also be rewarded for prolonged looking by making continual new discoveries such as finding a color, texture, or shape not immediately noticed.

“It is not easy to be authentic, letting vulnerability highlight a joy for creating. Do you remember when we just played? How our identity was intertwined with the greatest freedom of expression? It is the source of mark, color, layers, dimension, and texture. It is a view of the changing world, through a personal transformative experience.” The inspiration for Land of the Midnight Sun was a summer trip to Alaska. • photo on transparency construction with lace paper and fabric remnants 18 x 15 x 0.5"
There is something beautiful about the pure movement of tones between black and white in a photograph that can evoke in the viewer an emotive sensation. I deconstruct and reassemble photographic prints with other materials to allow for new imagery to develop, and I am passionate about the subjects that I work with. Subjects range from photographs of noted artists and writers, found album photos, and family portraits. Ambiguity and familial bond make the work all the more intriguing to me. From a single photograph, multiple images can emerge to portray strength, fragility, beauty, demise and love in a single moment.

This piece is inspired by waking up in the California desert on a winter's day. Who Told You That is a painting about shared histories-the stories that make us who we are and the stories other people tell themselves about us. Using bold colors and sculptural layers, my painting process is a developing tale and conversation between my materials and myself. To me this painting reflects an evolving universe where communication is less concrete. The narrative I’m creating becomes secondary to the narrative a viewer creates for themself. I’m interested in evoking memories and creating a history on my canvas, my own and yours, using rhythmic color, layers, shapes, marks and lines.

My inspiration for the wall hanging comes from the limitations women have in the workplace and in life. You Should Be... speaks to the expectations society dictates to women that can either impede or advance their opportunities. The partial list is written in the left side of the piece. I have been recently working on wall hangings that give me the freedom to express myself without the restraints of the "normal" picture plane,, ie., square, rectangle, etc.

This painting was inspired by hummingbirds who are frequent visitors to my back yard desert landscape. It is a acrylic multi-layered collage abstract, done in light blue-turquoise, red and black, embedded with hand printed papers, monoprints, exotic papers, papers collected from bits of everyday life, and original images. This piece was created using paper excavation, layers of paint and papers were applied and sanded through until the desired effect was achieved.

Geometric forms that represent balance and structure, tempered by modulating rays of light, combine to form a kaleidoscope of infinite possibilities. Inspired by the holistic concepts of space and time in the spiritual worlds of Indigenous and Eastern cultures, where empty space is significant and represents the potential for new ideas and possibilities, this work uses “empty” space and a cyclic array of forms and colors to create an nth dimensional world with spatial and temporal transformations that manifest various perceptual dichotomies.

"When I paint, I feel content and, in a sense, complete. It's the process and the immediate nature of my painting that is satisfying. I painted "After Dark' from my memory of the field near home. I'm happy to have my landscape painting in the 135th NAWA exhibition to highlight the contemporary landscape genre. Partly, because, my inspiration comes from nature and my predecessors, Nell Blaine, Rosa Bonheur, Joan Mitchell, women landscape painters overlooked for their contribution. “- Lully Schwartz 2024

  • sculpture 17.25 x 12 x 7.5"
I sometimes consider human constructed space and the natural world in my art. In our daily routines we often peer out of one space to glimpse the other. Here, I investigate the "nature deficit" caused by our highly managed world and its cure. The natural world encourages us to explore and dream; to re-engage with the essence of life and beauty, bringing about peace. All materials in this artwork come from nature, but nothing is in its naturally found form. The prefabricated metal structure points to industrial constructs, protrudes into the viewer’s space, and surrounds the implied interior space of the paintings which asks the viewer to step inside.

Whether it's capturing the human form in a raw and emotive way or exploring complex themes through subtle details, As I revisit the portrait genre repeatedly throughout my artistic career, I document the changes and growth within myself—both as an individual and as an artist, and my subject. Each portrait becomes a reflection of a state of mind, an experience, and emotions at a particular moment in time. Whether rendered in graphite, charcoal, or vibrant colors, these portraits can serve as visual diaries chronicling the passage of time and the complexities of the human condition.

I like the ethereal quality of finding images and shapes within and behind other shapes. I find ways to find "safe passage" through the canvas, much as we all manuever through life and find our way. Life is like a puzzle and we all have to find a way to make all the pieces fit. Intuitively I convey feelings in a particular painting depending on my situation at the time..exploring the way shapes intersect in life and the way we someimes hide the obvious behind a mask. However I want the viewer to reach their own conclusions about what the symbolism may represent and decide what I may have been thinking.

Inspired by art history's paintings of artists at their easels, I made this painting of the beginning of the process of awaiting an idea or inspiration for a painting. This part of the process is magical to me and perhaps the most difficult of going from idea to committing to creating a painting of that concept. For me the process begins by turning inward.

For the last five years I have been painting a series of portraits of the LGBTQ+ community. My main goal when painting their portraits was to achieve a likeness, but also show who the sitters are as individuals. For that purpose I asked them to choose their own clothing and ideas for the background designs. This young man was wearing his red hat when I met him on the subway. He is an actor and singer, having finished 3 years of playing the genie in the Broadway production of Aladdin.

As a fine artist: painter and sculptor. I use concepts of abstraction, cubism, and surrealism to explore the elusive qualities of time, energy, and storytelling. My influences come from everywhere, other art forms, such as jazz music, and the directness of child art. My artistic goal is to create seductive surfaces and provocative forms that involve the viewer in an emotional visual adventure, where they discover associations and meaning. I explore unique materials and techniques and invent images and narratives from my imagination .In this work I am responding to the tumultuous times in which we live. The layer of faces, sizes and positioning are a metaphor for relationships.

Andrea Sacker is a New York based painter working in oils, gouache and watercolor. I paint places, people and things that are dear to my heart, collecting and distilling the images mostly from my own photographs. I use my intuitive sense of color and composition to reflect my emotional relationship to the subject. I paint on linen, canvas and wood panels mostly within the satisfying limitations of a square. My paintings often reveal quiet moments that reflect my desire to counter the vicissitudes of the daily news and one's life experiences. I paint because I love the material and to express and uncover my relationship with the subject matter.

As an artist and a parent of four young children, trying to navigate life and love within the contexts of the larger world can be complicated. This work emotes imagery of place and time with playful and controlled shapes and color, often feeling like organizing chaos. The work reveals personalities and emotions that have conversations about shape, space and color. The act of painting itself is a metaphor for what we reveal and conceal about ourselves, moving through space and time, collecting emotions and deciding what we put on the surface and what we hide. What we know, and what we need to learn.

Rounded forms have, of late, stimulated participation in the circular movements of life – the coming round to something or spinning out of control. • oil on Belgian linen 12 x 12" The apprehension of movement on abstract shapes figure predominantly in my paintings. Each individual shape is a particular motion enacted on a still substrate, in this case Belgian Linen. The stop action union of these two opposing elements, movement on stillness and the idea of their simultaneous interaction is my longtime pursuit. I wish to offer a near view of particular shapes, conversing together. I propose these conversations in a sculptural manner adding tensions of heightened light, texture and color. My pursuit concurs with my idea that motion itself as a part of life is a mysterious occurrence.

It insists on normalcy and coping/acting as if all is fine in the face of the biggest life challenges. It could be autism, eating disorders, a congenital ailment, effects of smoking, phobias, IBS and and even acting as you are someone that deep down you don't feel as if it's who you are. • platinum/palladium photography 11 x 14" In my art work, I capture the simple beauty in the natural environment, providing moments of serenity. I use water and light as beautiful threads that draw the eye in. The quality of light is of paramount importance, defining the textures and forms in nature, and patterns of light and shadow. This image was originally captured with infrared film; the negative was subsequently scanned and transformed into a digital negative. I then contact printed the image using the platinum/palladium printing process to capture a softer, painterly effect, evoking late 19th century idyllic landscapes and lending a poetic quality to the image.

  • oil painting on linen 48 x 75 x 2" I am a visual storyteller, a painter of women, the sea, mysterious encounters and uncommon places. In all of my work, women are the dominant elements. My goal is not to idealize them in any way, but to portray each woman’s individuality, her power, her connection to other women and to the world. Birds, especially seabirds, have long been choreographed into my work, sometimes as companions, other times as avatars of change, growth, or escape. There is a dreamlike aspect to my paintings, a surreal confluence of elements that feels very real. In my larger work, my viewpoint is often just outside the picture plane – one more step and you feel as if you can enter the narrative of the painting.

While I try to answer this, I also invite the viewer to wander into the space and solve the mystery for themselves.

In this work I allow each material to inform the evolution of image making. Started during a road trip in 2023 with a small kit, I began these drawings with layers of brushed-on ink that got worked over with marker which rendered a silvery, burnished surface. These quickly became a process that encouraged intuitive shape-making, and where chaos on the page came to order through a network of connections.

  • oil on canvas 6 x 10 x 2" My inspiration for this recent piece, is my continued love of the 'Casa Colonica' in Italy. These farmhouses represent a rural life of an epoch gone by, which I find fascinating. By painting their portrait so to speak, I feel I am giving them a renewed voice and acknowledgement. I feel a connection to these massive structures. This particular view in the dark of night has a comforting feeling yet a loneliness standing in the shadows with only a half light from the moon illuminating. The stone wall in the foreground creates a presence of its own, inviting the viewer to proceed forward or warning to stay and watch from afar. Moonlight Moon is the beginning of my 'Italian Night Series.'

  • mixed media on Arches oil paper 13 x 13 x 1.25" I paint military spouses who live in West Point, NY- where the United States Military Academy is located. As a proud military spouse, I became interested in the cumulative effects of this lifestyle- exploring identity erasure, community, and impermanence. My work, "Sponors' Last Four," refers to the military's organization of spouses by the last four of the active duty member's social security- instead of their names. I also developed a process that was reflective of these experiences: the chaotic and relentless cycle of breaking down and starting over. I repeatedly disrupt, redraw, and rerender figures. I intend to not only express the challenges these women face but also their beauty.

Apprehensive, yet drawn to that upstairs window, we are unable to resist the temptation of looking inside, but feel guilty for invading someone’s privacy. The figure may have gone unnoticed. Returning outside, one might see that the odd sizing of the brick exterior is both curious and uncomfortable, dreamlike in the way it feels warped from sitting in the sun. This peculiar patterning draws us down to a solitary figure looking out a darkened window below, penned in, trapped, invisible.

A country, locality, or situation in which cultural assimilation results in blending the heritage and traditions of previously distinct ethnic groups. Yes, America has been labeled a melting pot of society, we encompass all colors, religions, nationalities to become a cohesive society, but our history also speaks of something else. A time when not all people who came to this country were treated the same, when people were spit upon, enslaved, and treated as second class citizens. We have spent the past few hundred years trying to rectify that mistake. We falter, some never learn, and when you put people with so many different ideas, beliefs together there beg to be differences. Will we ever.

I lived in Philadelphia only briefly decades ago, but in recent years I have had more than a few occasions to visit, thanks to the generosity of a local friend. I have taken advantage of those visits to sketch, paint and photograph various sites around the city. My paintings of South 9nth Street, the Italian Market's main drag, are my most successful efforts to date to capture the essence of one of Philadelphia's neighborhoods. I like the area's historic status and distinct character: It looks impervious to the development that is so prevalent in much of the city these days. Although, there are indications that this neighborhood too will give way to new construction.

I work directly from nature exploring a synthesis of abstraction and realism, positive space activating negative space, the pictorial field alive. A new voice spoke to me over 25 years ago with my move from New York to Bucks County, Pennsylvania. It spoke a language I had never known, but spoke a secret language to my heart. The contemplation of the expressive figure gave way to the perception and experience of life in a glorious landscape. It said this is home.  Here we bear witness to the natural cycle of renewal and rest. Landscapes and waterscapes, houses and abodes provide places where we can rest and dream.

I add stencils, plastic netting, paper. I use whatever fits, determined by the creative process. I carefully place the work on the press bed, hoping I don’t get too much ink on my hands. Desperately trying to keep the water-soaked paper clean, I lay it over the plate and crank the handle, pulling the rollers over the assembled work. I’ve surrendered control as the bed slides between the rollers, creating something beyond what I’ve organized. I have handed control over to the forces of nature.

Part of my "International Children Series", my photo captures an authentic moment in 2022 of two sisters in front of their living quarters in their Laotian village. There is an irony to their donated GAP clothing and Nike sandals, dirty and worn, in the materialistic standards and values of life in America. Looking further into this photograph, one can see a typical home in Laos, bringing to reality the life of these young girls. Most importantly, their natural expressions add emotional overtones to this piece. as they help to convey a story of the children of Laos.

My process is intuitive. The curve of pencil line, the profile of a face or ancient sculpture, the palette and form were entirely happenstance. In conversation with a well-known artist and curator years ago, my work was described by them as “sophisticated.” Later, working with that individual became a rude awakening of how sexist, degrading and elitist the art world can be for a female identified artist. I felt this piece was a triumph in its overt femininity, fresh gesture and formal strength which is why I chose it for this show.

My paintings are spontaneous. At some point I see a subject develop, and if I like it, I continue with it. That is how A Question of Balance was created. It represents our struggle to achieve an acceptable balance with all we have to handle in our life.

In this vibrant creation, I sought to capture the raw, unfiltered essence of human passion and energy. Using acrylic, chalk, and sand, I've given life to a figure that radiates with dynamism, embodying freedom and unshackled expression. The bold textures and effervescent hues will send a current of vitality through any space, inspiring onlookers to embrace the dance of life with unrestrained joy.

In my latest body of work entitled "Echoes," I explore memories and long-forgotten sounds from my youth. Each painting serving as a vessel for a poem of a childhood train as the underpainting. The thin top layers befit the ghost-like forms featured in my surface designed compositions and recall the carefree spirit of childhood explorations.

At this time in history, we are experiencing trials both in the courts and in other interpretations of the word: environmental stressors, active wars, and in our own reintegration to a post Covid society. Women are being denied necessary medical care, there is no uniformity from state to state, and people are scared of what the courts will rule for future laws.

The Ages of Man symbolizes the gradual change from youth to middle age to old age. From naivete to maturity to wisdom. As we age and observe all the models(family, friends, media) surrounding us, we hope to learn and gain knowledge.

I used newspaper clippings as a prompt for this piece which inspired a commentary on the disruptions and eruptions within the environment, specifically the landscape. Changes that are both human and naturally caused. Included in this work is a dried and pressed lei from a trip I took to Hawaii several years ago. A symbol of the beauty that often masks the underlying chaos deep within the landscape that is begging for our attention (Lahaina Fire).

Grounded in realism, the drawing navigates between reality and interpreted vision. Eliminating all references to color, the monochromatic palette enables exploration into a scene simply and directly and with a sense of abstracted reality. Manipulating dark and light through a myriad of tonal contrasts goes beyond representation to where, layer upon layer, delicate strokes and nuances convey an ethereal, serene image. The work is not necessarily a direct representation of a scene but is a practice of nurturing an appreciation of the incessant resilience of the flourishing and decaying of nature and the complexities of our relationship within those cycles.

My art becomes a vehicle for myself and others to better understand difficult issues that confront us daily; These issues including hate, discrimination, prejudice, race, victimization, etc. I believe my role as an artist is to provide a visual representation of these uncomfortable subjects that are often difficult to put into words. providing a platform for conversation. Hopefully it will help others to understand and move forward with all being able to live life free from discrimination.

I am always wondering what it means to make art at a time when it seems we humans are not up to maintaining the health of our beautiful planet and its creatures. How can I just sit around and make pictures? What I do know is that for me, making art is like being a therapist (my profession for almost fifty years), and is like living life. Everything has a way of falling apart and then gathering together, making form out of the unformulated, continually layering and digging beneath the layers. The complexities of abstraction, color, line, and texture are the tools I employ in my passionate reach for exploration of the not yet imagined.

White Cedar Swamp is a magical place near my home and studio on Cape Cod. I was unaware this wonderland was tucked between the bay and the national seashore, less than a mile away from me, until a friend introduced me to the place on a hike. I felt transported in this space, surrounded by trees and dazzled by the reflections in the pools of water. Immediately, I knew I had found a new muse. I am drawn back there frequently and it is always a different spectacle. Moonlight Magic depicts my memory of the swamp on the rising of The March Worm Moon. In folklore, this full moon symbolizes inspiration, rebirth, hope, and luck.

"A nkisi acts as an intercessor between ancestral spirits and the living." Minksi (pl of nkisi) were "used for a community’s well-being, assuring fertility, protecting against illnesses, and generally keeping malevolent forces at bay. Their commissioning reflected a fear that disruptive forces would damage the village’s unity." [source: Community Power Figure: Male (Nkisi) Metropolitan Museum of Art, NY, Yaëlle Biro, 2018.] I hope Nkisi for Elections will act as an intercessor between the spirits of the founding fathers of our democracy, our Constitution, and the politicians of today.

  • acrylic paint with collage on cradled wood panel 24 x 18 x .75"
This painting, Rewilding, references the ruderal plant growth that breaks through the brick, steel, and concrete of abandoned urban spaces. It is part of a series of abstract paintings made in response to on-site drawings of former brick factories in the forest alongside the Hudson River, NY. The way these plants break through the industrial structures and restore the scarred earth is a metaphor of resiliency and the impermanence of things . By releasing the structures we once thought supported us, we can discover new growth and the power of possibility.

  • screen-printed, stitched vintage linen 12 x 12 x .875"
The series of Keeping Up Appearances tackles some of the thornier social issues of mid-20th century America, inspired by text from a 1954 book on etiquette. This text ensured cultural boundaries were not to be crossed. Incorporating vintage linens upon which dye has been painted and text screen-printed, this work is also hand-stitched and machine-stitched. The text is copied from Amy Vanderbilt’s Complete Book of Etiquette and is used with permission by Lincoln G. Clark, trustee of the Amy Vanderbilt Kellar Literary Property Trust.

Closing the Gap uses rescued vintage table linens and hand dyed fabrics, some of which were outgrown clothing. The colored textiles represent individuals, families, communities and organizations. The white space is the distance and time between them. As we seem to be experiencing disconnection from the collective whole, this piece is about the energy and perhaps turmoil that is necessary to close the gap that divides us. The vintage textiles and color palette are a nod to the mid-century, when we were more connected to our communities yet fractioned as a society. It is history repeating itself through art.

I am a abstract landscape painter. The greens of the surrounding lawn set off the blooms in the rose garden. The colors green and red are complements on the color wheel. Within the choices for the color green I went "Veronese Green." A blast of pure cadmium green with that Venetian/Veronese "twist". The red is many reds but mostly pure cadmium red medium and alizarin crimson--sometimes mixed or overlapping, other times almost pure. The "rose garden" is framed by a cadmium yellow deep border and then outlined in aluminum paint. I am excited about this painting: the big singular shape, the colors and the framing to set it all off.

  • silk ribbons, antique maps, antique wooden shoe forms 11 x 9 x 3"
Refugees - maps from geography books published in 1868 are cut and recombined. Combining the maps with antique wooden shoe forms and hand dyed silk ribbons, suggests a journey charted, imagined, or remembered. A unique perspective of mapping the world is depicted utilizing the antique materials in sharp contrast to our present day issues and conflicts, affecting untold populations around the world. The carefully charted topographies, geographies, boundaries and coordinates are ultimately transformed and inviting new explorations. Layering the paper intuitively, responding to the antique cartographic renderings, allows for new territories to form.

She-Tree is part of an ongoing series exploring the many roles of women as myth-makers, healers, storytellers, peacemakers, earth mothers and warriors. These mixed media dreamscapes are constructed on tactile substrates such as my paintings, handcrafted papers, fabrics, monoprints, photographs, antique books and wallpaper. Adding and subtracting the elements randomly, I then glue, sew, paint, and manipulate them into a slowly evolving composition. Layered with patterns and symbols, metaphor and archetypes I unite often- disparate worlds into new relationships—compositions and artworks that reveal the interconnectedness of nature, life, spirit and time.

In this "portrait," I'm trying to capture the rebellious aspects of a woman's personality, mainly through the colorful and nonconformist way she adorns herself as well as her living space. I'm inspired by the simplicity and directness of Folk and Outsider art. And when I was working on this piece, the words to the David Bowie song, "Rebel, Rebel," were going through my mind.

Kepaniwai Heritage Park is a garden paradise nestled between gentle mountains on the island of Maui. Pavilions in the park are there to honor the various ethnic groups that helped settle Hawai'i. In this painting, I capture the moist atmosphere that hovers over lush and colorful foliage. The bridge represents a very small human element that exists along side of nature.

I have always loved photographing people. What energizes me is how spontaneous the process is, and unpredictable people are. This photograph was taken, several years ago, on a Photography trip to Guatemala. I was struck by the light and shadow on the woman, the stairs, and arch, as she was sweeping the church steps. The scene that was in the background seemed to glow in the sunlight. It was a magical moment! These days you might find me with my camera, photographing people on the streets of NYC.

The Master Potter, a dear friend of mine, her hands move knowing while her mind drifts creatively. Sumi-e, on double shuan paper all from the same ink thinned to a wash to create the gradients, dry brush created the highlights in her hair. The subtle bleeds created between the paper and the ink honor the potters love of Raku and Sager Firing. A tribute to an artist that mastered her medium over 50 years and pushed the envelop up to the end.
