Maude Sherwood Jewett was born to Col. John D. and Emmaline C. (Zimmerman) Sherwood in Englewood, New Jersey, on June 6, 1873. Her father, a graduate of Yale and Harvard Law School, was an established New York City lawyer and renowned writer.
