Making art from experience is always an authentic place to start. Being a late-blooming career commuter from New Jersey to New York City, I started documenting the feet of subway riders. It is tricky to “borrow” someone’s actual facial, or full image (though I have also done that), but no one will complain if you document their feet. Also, feet are very interesting, whether for their style of footwear, gesture, or movement. I had created the skylines in encaustic monotype form a long time ago, having other intentions for them which never materialized. However, they were suggestive enough of the urban landscape to use as a backdrop for the feet, which also (use your imagination) appear as windows in the “buildings.” The buildings are, after all, probably the most frequent destination for all these traveling feet. They are on the subway, on an escalator, holding their bags or props, or supporting a very interesting pair of legs or pants. These variations are endless- to keep my gaze, and also my boredom down in a fairly long commute, composing these shots became a project. Now they stand as a document of urban experience.
