Airegin (music: Wes Montgomery, Airegin)
oil pastel on paper
14 x 14

I created “Airegin” in response to/collaboration with the jazz standard of the same title, played by Wes Montgomery. The lively rhythms, textures and improvisational feel in the song inspired the active forms I used in the painting. The palette always begins with the colors I hear in the music, and I expand as needed to create a cohesive work.

As an artist born with perfect pitch and synesthesia, my ability to ‘hear’ colors is a wellspring of inspiration. My abstract work explores various musical keys, tempi, rhythms, patterns and moods. As I investigate these varieties of musical palettes and textures, I work with a variety of media and techniques to best express the way I see-hear.
