Olivia Langdon married American writer and humorist Samuel Clemons in Elmira, NY, in 1870. Together they had 3 daughters, including Susy, Clara and Jean. Their son Langdon died of diphtheria in 1872 at the age 19 months. Her husband Mark Twain wrote under his pen name in their gazebo in Hartford, CT. She was a faithful, judicious, and painstaking editor for her husband. Olivia was also a proponent of women’s rights, and surrounded herself with influential women including educator Julia Beecher and Isabella Beecher Hooker, abolitionist and suffragette.
