Christie DevereauxOn January 31, 2024, NAWA celebrated its 135th year anniversary. In 1889, five generous, dynamic, persistent, and visionary women artists courageously started what is now known as the National Association of Women Artists. Those same qualities are still prevalent today as our members continue to carry on NAWA’s legacy with the same spirit for the benefit of future members of the NAWA Sisterhood.

A demonstration of the NAWA spirit is reflected in the events that are being planned and exhibits that are happening in 2024. Here are some highlights that you should be aware of that will increase NAWA’s visibility in the art world.

  • From January to March 2024, the exhibit “Visions of Peace & Joy” will be on view at the three Flushing Banks in New York.
  • The Vanda Gallery, which is owned by a NAWA member, will have an exhibit from March 1 to March 31, 2024 called “Women Who Tell Our Stories.” The gallery is located in New Rochelle, New York.
  • NAWA’s Whiskey Bottle Project will be an online Auction Fundraiser. The deadline to submit your bottle design is May 31, 2024.
  • The College Art Association Conference is in Chicago this year from February 14 to February 17. Jill Cliffer Baratta and Lauralynn White will be there to network and let people know about NAWA.
  • Hollis Taggart Gallery in Manhattan has selected NAWA artists for an exhibition from March 21 to April 20, 2024. The reception is on March 21, 2024 from 5 to 8 pm.
  • NAWA’s 135th Annual Member Exhibition will be held in One Art Space. In addition to the exhibit, there will be two panel discussions in the evening at 7 pm on June 13 and June 20, 2024. Jill Cliffer Baratta has created a PowerPoint for NAWA’s 135th Anniversary, which will be shown during the panel discussions.
  • Tomayko Foundation is a beautiful exhibition space in Pittsburg, PA. NAWA artists will be selected for an exhibition from April 19 to May 31, 2024.

In closing, here is something to consider. Although 135 years have gone by, women artists are still under-represented in museums and galleries, but with the tenacity and ingenuity of NAWA artists, volunteers, and office staff, this can change. To quote Jane Goodall, “What you do makes a difference and you have to decide what kind of difference you want to make.” Let’s make a difference together!

Have an inspiring and creative spring!
