Still Life: Green and Orange Study

oil on canvas

Size: 18 x 24

I am constantly hoarding; filling my studio with empty plastic bottles and discarded packaging. I commemorate these objects through painting before I let them go. My work investigates consumerism, environmentalism, and sentimentality under the framework of Western still-life painting traditions. However, I reach for formal haphazardness, letting my eyes wander around the dark, messy corners of my studio until they land naturally on interesting moments. I then zoom in and out of this potential composition, not moving anything but rather adjusting my own body’s placement in relation to what is already there. I transform candy wrappers and tabletops into odd, illogical spaces. The result is a traffic jam of bottles and forgotten Post-It notes, rendered almost unintelligible. I paint from life in oil paint, experimenting with colorful lighting. Though I am looking intensely at the tableau set before me, I am an unreliable narrator, creating visual puzzles and selective realities.
