Sky Eyes Mother
SKY EYES MOTHER – This oil painting is from my Vanishing Women series.: Sky Eyes Mother is about femicide and violence against women My beautiful niece disappeared in 2016. My sister’s eyes have become the infinite sky as she continues to hold her sleeping child. The sacred drum beats a warning – calling attention to the continuing tragedy of missing and murdered Indigenous women and girls. Note the corn on left. This is Corn Mother, the mother of the people.
I am an multidisciplinary artist of Abenaki descent. I use indigenous iconography and ancient narratives to comment on contemporary social issues. My paintings explore the liminal space between abstraction and representation, mother and landscape, spectacle and solitude.
