The exquisite landform at Sunset Cliffs in La Jolla, California, belies the unwitting sacrifices made by indigenous populations who stood in the way of conquest and “progress.” Their memory transmuted onto the canvas by way of this artist’s brush in an undeniable form. I contemplated this surprise for a few months before deciding to honor it, front and center.
