Richard Serra’s monumental, subtle, and astonishing steel sculptures in the Bilbao Guggenheim left an indelible impression on me. The surfaces of many of the sculptures are almost Japanese in effect to my mind, and I sought to evoke some of the patterns using silverpoint and a palimpsest use of Polychromos pencil.
