These two paintings are part of a series of Blue Paintings I have done over the years. So this is not really a “Blue Period” a la Picasso, but a sustained interest in returning to blue over the years, from time to time. “Blue Girl” can be said to sustain one reading of the idea of blue, as in waking up with the blues, and going to bed that way too. “Blues Bird” refers to the idea of blue in its “blues music” musical context, which can include joy and vitality. “Blues Bird” also expresses my interest in texture and mixed media in my paintings, although I also think “Blue Girl” is also a painting that includes a sense of texture.
