While exhibiting my paintings in Italy in 2018, I traveled by car to Reggio, Calabria, the home of my grandparents. I visited many museums along the way, and discovered that mermaids were prevalent in Italian lore and art. They reminded me of the Celtic selkies, and the Native American myth of Sedna. I instilled the wonder, joy, and hope I absorbed from their stories into She Harbors the Sea.
