Picasso marble on a marble base
14 x 10 x 7″
I chose the stone because of its interesting coloring while understanding it would be a challenge to carve. The mixture of colors, combination of elements it was composed of, and the dry brittle quality would make it difficult to control. I kept the form simple because of the complex design, yet I wanted the dynamic of the piece moving through space, inspired by the name of the stone, “Picasso,”: thus, the title Harlequin. I utilized power tools to avoid unwanted breaks. The process was direct carving meaning that I had no preconceived idea or model to refer to. Through both an intuitive process and calculated design solutions.
