This sculpture was created in 2020 after George Floyd was murdered. My work often involves archetypal images like Sheela-na-gigs and vultures. The vulture harkens to the ancient Egyptian goddess Nekhbet. The vulture was the first image I saw in the stone. The Black Lives Matter protests in Portland continued for 100 nights. At one point, a nude white woman postured as a Sheela-na-gig, displaying her vulva toward the police. For me, she was the perfect back of the vulture as the vulture was the perfect front for the Sheela. Combined, they gave me hope for a new future.
