What began as a life painting session, The Chanteuse and the Nightingale evolved as a conceptual painting that recognizes the model, Mozelle Andrulot, and her talents as a jazz singer. With the loveliest sound of all song birds, the nightingale symbolizes Mozelle’s marvelous jazz vocals. The distant view of low tide at dusk honors both the model’s first name, Hebrew for “drawn from the water,” and acknowledges that both the jazz chanteuse and the nightingale share their gift with us after the sun goes down.
