Worn by a variety of cultures in Africa, antiquity documents the wearing of Locs or Dreadlocks and braids back to 3000 BC in the Sahara Desert. Dreadlocks are worn for many reasons including religious/spiritual beliefs, rites of passage, ethnic pride, the rejection of capitalism and colonialism. The Crown Act, first signed into law in California in 2019, now law in 24 states including Texas, prohibits the denial of employment and educational opportunities based upon natural hair texture or style. Texas continues to draw national attention as it denies educational opportunites to students with Locs (protected under the Crown Act). The Crown Act has failed to pass the US Congress twice.
