Standing Firm4

Jill Cliffer Baratta, MFA has been a member, volunteer and officer of NAWA since 2011. Visiting Brookgreen Gardens in 2023, attending a South Carolina Chapter meeting, Jill wandered the gardens. The land was donated by sculptor and NAWA member Anna Hyatt Huntington and her husband in 1931, so it took on significance beyond the beauty of the expansive estate. The bronze series “Circle of Life, Spring” caught the eye. The acrylic painting, entitled “Standing Firm,” is an interpretation of this figure, created by Harold “Tuck” Langland in 2001, and donated to the park. The image, backed by Spanish moss, took on special meaning as Jill’s daughter was just moving to the southern U.S., and is a yoga instructor. Further insight emerged as the politics of the country caused so much upheaval that the title of the painting, “Standing Firm” took on additional and deeper meaning.
