A Fragmented Life

Sculpture: Glazed and Fire Stoneware

Size of Piece: 8 x 7 x 8

A Fragmented Life evolved from a workshop dealing with the idea of house. A house protects and a house can conceal. The figure is broken but not falling apart. She is trying to gain sustenance from the broken elements below her. The various pieces are glazed, fired stoneware.
The McCarthy plaque shows my great grandparents, Dennis and Mary McCarthy, after they emigrated from Ireland to upstate New York, leaving behind the Great Famine. They were married in 1874, and had 7 children including my grandmother Julia Guinane. The relief was modeled in clay and a plaster was made from that and colored with a bronze paint.
