Tama Takahashi

I am a mixed-race Japanese-American artist working on two series: The first is a contemporary interpretation of traditional Japanese gold leaf screens using kimono silk, washi paper and paint on 24-karat gold leaf. The second series makes social commentary on topics including the Japanese-American internment, the fight against sexism, and saving the environment. In 2023 I opened my studio. The same year, I was awarded an Emerging Artist Fellowship from the California Arts Council and was in my first international group show at the Tokyo Metropolitan Art Museum where I won an “Award of Excellence” and a “Gold Award”. In 2024 and 2025 I also received Gold Awards. I’ve shown in Lecce, Italy; twice at the Nagasaki Prefectural Art Museum; and at CICA Museum in South Korea. Last year I was selected by Asian Art Contemporary for their interview series on international Asian artists. I will have a solo show in Los Angeles in October 2025 at Gallery 825.
