Jody Cukier
Situated at the water’s edge on the East End of Long Island, I collect seashells and marine-life fragments from which I create small sculptures and abstract assemblies that I photograph. The labor of hand-collection and the patience of hand-assembly gives me a direct connection to the tactile qualities of my subject, which I try to capture and convey to others in my images. I’m drawn to the soothing rhythms of the repeating patterns, textures, and shapes and I marvel at how much beauty can endure, despite a tumultuous journey – how one can still find beauty in that which is broken.
