I am an abstract encaustic artist, and nature profoundly influences my work. I am intrigued by physical processes that reference the passage of time including, fossilization, mineralization, weathering and erosion. There is beauty and power in change, but there is also a sense of vulnerability, the unsettling idea that nothing is constant. In my work I intend to capture temporal landscapes (timescapes) through texture and color, in order to build surface topographies that reflect change over time. Encaustics is a highly versatile medium in that a variety of materials can be embedded in the wax. I incorporate a suite of different fibers into the wax including silk, wool, cotton and paper. Painting and fusing many layers of wax embedded with fiber results in a highly textured surface (accretion), giving many of my works a sculptural feel. I strive to build directional and purposeful accretions that embody the vestiges of change.
