Connie Newton Stancell
My childhood was spent in rural New England. I am painting remembered experiences of home, of nature and of the natural world. Working in my studio, artworks evolve over time with additions and subtractions of colors and textures. My painting process involves integral connections of music, meditations, intuition, gestured brush strokes and the gradual refining of shapes and colors to essential patterns, forms, and color juxtapositions. Texture is created through gestured brush strokes and scratching back into layers of paint or adding white tissue paper or other materials to the canvas and then layering paint over the material. There is a rhythms of color masses and brush strokes that may be discerned in the paintings reflecting musical favorites which include popular music as well as opera choruses and arias and classical music.
