Micheline Klagsbrun
WRIT on WATER, solo exhibition
NAWA member Micheline Klagsbrun will have a solo exhibition from April 23 through May 17, 2025, at the Studio Gallery, 2108 R St NW, Washington DC.
Curated by Aneta Georgievska-Shine, Micheline said that Writ on Water is about “the instability of memory and identity.”
She added, “In recent years, my focus on immigration and displacement has led me to a deeper awareness of the importance of ‘papers’ – documents of passage (visas, letters) but also family photographs, spiritual texts – which feel integral to our identity.”
“I think about my deceased grandmother’s photo album, my family’s only surviving archive, and the incomplete scraps of information it preserves.
I think about what other refugees have carried with them: the remains of a bible in the border desert, love letters in a pocket, a crumpled photograph in a wallet.
“I imagine these precious documents in states of transition: underwater, floating, disintegrating. Yet water also carries memory, and as words and images dissolve they are free to float out into the invisible world, preserved in other forms.”
In her mixed-media work, she said she creates a “palimpsest of layers to evoke the elusive nature of identity and memory.”
Studio Gallery (www.studiogallerydc.com) is open Wednesday through Saturday and by appointment. Details for Micheline’s exhibit special hours: Artist Reception: May 10, 3-6pm; First Friday: May 2, 6-8pm; and Third Thursday: May 15, 6-8pm.
