Opening Reception: Saturday, November 3, 12-3pm
Between October 15, 2018 and January 2, 2019, The National Association of Women Artists will present ART OF THE STORY: EXPANDING THE NARRATIVE, a juried exhibition hosted by the historic and beautiful Grand Central Library in the heart of Manhattan. This is a unique exhibit that challenges the artists to translate the verbal universe of the story—or an emotional or intellectual state of being—into the visual, broadening the way we look at the world. NAWA feels there is no better place to host such an exhibition than the public library, a lasting depository for the world’s own treasure chest of stories.
NAWA has a long-established relationship with the New York Public Library. Six branches of the NYPL through a generous 2016 grant from the Blanchette Hooker Rockefeller fund, hosted well-received NAWA shows, including 58th Street, Mid-Manhattan, Jefferson Market, Tompkins Square, Mulberry Street, and the Riverside Library near Lincoln Center. Several group exhibitions have been held at the Mulberry Street Branch and in 2018 NAWA provided a six-month Workshop program there, in which poetry readings were highlighted as inspiration to creation of artworks.
The Riverside Branch has hosted NAWA’s exhibit series, EV(e)OLUTION, for the past eight years (2011-2018) to commemorate Women’s History Month. NAWA members’ juried work has been displayed in the Riverside’s Community Room/Art Gallery. “Meet the Artist” panel discussions there engaged the audience through Q&A and allowed the viewers to share their own art experiences with the NAWA artists. NAWA looks forward to Women’s History Month at the Grand Central Library in March, 2019.
