Viennese Period Room
8.5 x 9.5″
colored pencil on vellum
Viennese Period Room is of one of the many period rooms at the Metropolitan Museum. This one is a dioramic recreation of an eighteenth-century Viennese drawing room. I.ve always admired the artistry and stagecraft of the museum’s dioramas. I was intrigued by the narrative possibilities of this scene as well: Has an early musical recital taken place here? One of the French windows is a jar, perhaps the harpist has just stepped out, or perhaps the room is being aired in anticipation of an evening soiree.
I did a detailed value drawing on site in graphite, which enabled me to capture the nuance and ambience of the setup. However, the finished product was completed in my studio.
