NAWA and the Monroe Township Cultural Arts Commission proudly present HerStory250, an exhibition celebrating the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence. The Declaration proclaimed “unalienable rights,” “Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness,” and “consent of the governed.” Women lead, create, organize, innovate, and with grit, are changemakers who persevere and continue to inspire a future of inclusivity through humane practice of justice within society.
This exhibition, part of America250, displays the creative reimagining of how women have contributed to the founding of, and have carried forth the founding principles of this nation for themselves, their families, and for all Americans.
About NAWA
The National Association of Women Artists (NAWA), founded in 1889, stands as the first professional women’s organization established in the United States.
Five pioneering women sought to address the lack of opportunities for women artists. Anita C. Ashley, Adele Francis Bedell, Elizabeth S. Cheever, Grace Fitz-Randolph, and Edith Mitchill Prellwitz spearheaded a vital alternative to the restrictions of the day, providing a supportive network and avenues for exhibition.
Current Signature Members are juried into NAWA for a lifetime membership, once accepted.
