Vibrant Poppy Glow – Scotland
photograph on wrapped canvas
24 x 24

While walking through a Scottish garden, I encountered this extraordinary poppy growing and knew it had to be photographed. In Lightroom, I isolated the flower, blurred and darkened the surrounding garden to pure black, allowing the color and architecture of the bloom to speak without distraction. The ruffled white petals spreading wide against a pure black background draw the eye inward to the magenta-green center — a surprise that rewards the viewer repeatedly. That unexpected burst of color and design at the heart of something so classically simple is what makes this image compelling to me.

I photograph flowers the way the Dutch Golden Age masters painted them: as they are, not as we might wish them to be. The shadows falling across these petals are real. The raindrops are real. I do not correct nature’s imperfections, because they are not imperfections — they are evidence that this flower lived.
