It is a common practice to create artwork through tone by manipulating the lightness or darkness of colors and shades to create form, depth, and atmosphere. When creating this artwork, I was focusing more on tones than color and decided to only use only the shades of gray to define the horses. By adjusting the contrast between light and dark areas, I believed I could control the viewer’s emotional response, guiding the eye to focal points, and establishing a sense of realism or drama.
