“Vile” is a diptych from my larger series “Every Woman and Nobody.” This body of work explores the intersections of memory, trauma, and the body. Here my exposed neck is juxtaposed with a vial constructed of broken glass, hair, and a twig. A translucent overlay of a document, the words obscured, repeated, and reversed, reveals the medical record of a teenage suicide attempt. The two images connect the vulnerability of the body with the symbolism of containment, poison, and preservation. The title, Vile, plays on the dual meaning of “vial” as a vessel and “vile” as something repellent, alluding to the act of swallowing poison and the enduring imprint of harm.
