Birth of a Legend
oil on canvas
Size of Piece: 18 x 14 x 1.5
In 2024, the Lucy Craft Laney Museum of Black History approached NAWA sister Rhian Swain and me to create an art exhibition featuring local Augusta Black history stories. Rhian and I went to work creating art that told stories both well known and obscure. One of the stories that fascinated me was the long-ago demolished Lenox Theatre. The Lenox was a Black-only theatre, a centerpiece of Augusta’s Golden Blocks neighborhood, and was built to offer the Black community their very own safe space for entertainment. No whites were allowed. The legacy of the Lenox, and the resiliency and history of Black Augustans in the 20th century, is a subject dear to my heart.
Additional shipping/delivery charges will be handled between the artist and buyer after the purchase.
