We offer you another stimulating issue of NOW, NAWA’s online magazine, featuring thoughtful writing on an array of topics – from the story of an Iranian artist who fashioned a rudimentary copier for her work designing carpets to the reflections of our own Jen Haefeli on the five “Ninth Street Women” artists who revolutionized abstract expressionism and maneuvered women into that space.
Importantly, Executive Director Jill Clifford Baratta in her column introduces the new NAWA Exhibition standards for artwork using Artificial Intelligence. You won’t want to miss that update, and the challenging conversations I am sure will ensue. Send us a letter at magazine@thenawa.org with your thoughts on AI and its appropriate role, if any in your opinion, in art. The magazine serves the membership as a forum for exchanging ideas and strengthening our common bonds in these challenging times.
As we move our coverage into the far-flung corners of women’s art past and present, the magazine will be refreshed, particularly to capitalize on digital means to amplify our public presence and connect the membership. A new chapter of NAWA has just formed in Pennsylvania, and a nascent group is coalescing in California. Our important work at NAWA to encourage these new groups and support existing members continues.
Watch this space for updates this Fall.

Thanks to all of you who participated in publishing this Spring Issue of NAWA Now Magazine. We have grown from a core group of three into an organization that is layered, flexible, and resourceful. We have two coeditors, three continuing emeriti contributors, core contributors and quite a few people who have interesting things to say for an issue or two.
I hope our growth is a reflection of your approval.
Our core mission remains to be for our members, about our members and to our members, but our magazine is also available to the general public, and it is archived on the internet and our website. Feel free to invite your friends and collectors and supporters to subscribe or send them links to your submissions, awards, or articles you think they may appreciate. Write to me at magazine@thenawa.org to learn how to do that or to propose articles to one of the categories open for submissions.
Under the Radar:
If you had a mentor or was deeply influenced by a woman artist you think was under-represented, or an artist you admire and think we wouldn’t otherwise know about, send us your thoughts. We want to hear from you.
Shout Outs:
Shout outs are open to all members. You can submit an essay that describes your practice and experience and include up to five images. We will lightly edit
Exhibitions:
If you are having a one or two person show, or some equivalent honor, let us know.
Tools of the Trade:
This category is for the technical aspects of art making. We want to know the tools, techniques, materials and processes. We can do this as an essay or an interview. Images and videos are important parts.
We consider all submissions and can decide if their content is consistant with our mission and where to place them.
If we publish, these links will remain active so feel free to include them on your websites, or the “Publications” section of your resumes.
I hope you enjoy this issue. It’s full of insight and passion and very talented women. I enjoyed editing it. As I composed the Awards page, I was reminded that we are a diverse, devoted, and accomplished group of artists.
Best wishes,
Sarah
